Salt and Sacrifice offers a variety of multiplayer capabilities, from cooperative PvE to antagonistic PvP, to a chaotic blend of both. Frustratingly, unlocking the various collaboration and invasion options will require you to look closely at the game''s areas, as many of the required NPCs are hidden deep inside dungeons.
However, once unlocked, multiplayer sessions can be quite rewarding. Not only are they fun to play, but you may also earn special tokens that allow you to purchase unique items, weapons, and armor.
How To Play Co-Op
To initiate a cooperative, you''ll go to the east of the portal in Pardoner''s Vale and connect with the Cooperation Board here.
With a passkey, you may arrange a co-op session or join one. Not all of the rune slots must be used, but the passkey must be matched for both players.
Certain items must be acquired for multiplayer gameplay, and certain factions must be unlocked. These will allow you to match up with other players randomly, either for PvE or PvP gameplay. If you want to avoid invaders, you can set a password in the Settings menu.
Six factions are available to unlock. Successfully completeing a multiplayer session while working under one of these factions will reward you with a token, which can be used to purchase special equipment from the faction''s representative, who will be recruited to the Vale of Pardoner.
The following table shows the six factions you can play for, as well as where you''ll be able to meet them in the world. Once you''ve met them, they''ll move to Pardoner''s Vale, where you may talk with them further and buy them from them. In addition, the item shows how many weapons they sell.
|Dawnlight Cooperation||PvE||Greymoss Mire, Ashbourne Village||Vanguard, Twohander||Class 3 Heavy|
|Sherrif Inquisition||PvP versus Invaders||Unclean Oasis, Bol Gerahn||Whip, Highblade||Class 3 Light|
|Oathbound Watchers||PvP versus Invaders||Corvius'''' Mire||Greathammer, Throwing Axe||Class 5 Heavy|
|Shroud Alliance||PvP Invasion||Bol Gerahn Temple, Bol Gerahn||Twindagger, Scythe||Class 2 Heavy|
|Blueheart Runners||PvP Invasion||Stonehall Dungeon, Ashbourne Village||Halfspear, Rapier||Class 2 Light|
|Chaos Hunger||PvP Invasion||Old Annex, Dreadstone Peak||Whip, Scythe||Class 2 Light|
These three factions are a tense effort to assist others, although two of them do so by putting you up against other players in order to protect the host.
You have to have a Dawnlight Cooperator with two things:
- To be guiltless through the use of a Guiltless Shard.
- To use the Golden Candle, an item that you can get in Greymoss Mire from the west.
If you want to join a player as a Cooperator, you''ll first need to recruit Dawnlight''s NPC representative to Pardoner''s Vale. If you head below the gatehouse in Ashbourne Village and take the lower western exit, you''ll get her. Talk to her in Pardoner''s Vale, and you''ll be able to match up with other players through the use of a Pale Candle or the Mirrorgate in Pardoner''s Vale.
Players who use Dawnlight Cooperation to play together are susceptible to invasions from Shroud Alliance, Blueheart Runners, and the Chaos Hunger factions.
You''ll need to have access to the same worlds and the same Inquisitors'' Tools as they as you do to join a player.
You''ll have to recruit the faction''s NPC in the Unclean Oasis, an area that can be accessed from the east side of Bol Gerahn Temple. You''ll need to fall onto his platform from the very few platforms below.
The Tealfeather Amulet will be introduced when you wear it (or if you use the portal), into the worlds being invaded by Blueheart Runner invaders. Here, your aim is to kill the Blueheart Runner.
The Oathbound Watchers are quite similar to the Sheriff Inquisition. Once you have discovered the NPC, who is located near the entrance to The Great Tree, you''ll receive the Oathwritten Amulet.
When you wear this Amulet, you may be drawn into the world of a player being invaded by a Chaos Hunger or Shroud Alliance player.
If you want to invade another player, you''ll have to do so under one of these factions. They all differ in their playstyle, and their NPCs are all located in the Treachers'' Grotto after being recruited by Pardoner.
If you are invading under the Chaos Hunger faction, you may infiltrate a player only if they are cooperating.
While in the field, you''ll either have to use a quickplay item from one of the factions below (i.e. not in Pardoner''s Vale), or the portal located in Treachers'' Grotto is required.
The use of the Crimson Candle item will enable a player to be invaded without having a co-op partner first, but you must not be Spellmarked for this to work.
If you utilize the Full Moon Incense to remove the phenomenon, there will be a 15-minute cooldown.
This faction is your basic "invade player''s world, kill the player to win."
To gain access to this faction, you''ll need to contact the NPC located at the very top of Bol Gerahn Temple. Once at Pardoner''s Vale, you may acquire Pages of Curses from him that you may use to invade while you are outside.
In Blueheart Runner invasions, your goal is to destroy Hazeburnt Husks in order to collect their Haze. The host will be weakening, making it easier to eventually kill.
The NPC that allows you to join this faction is located behind a locked door inside Stonehall Dungeon. The first key to open the door that blocks your way is at the top of the Archridge District. The second key is located at the roofs, and the second is at the top of the area.
Blue Candles can be purchased from this NPC, with which you may begin invasions or simply use the nearby portal. There may also be Illusionist''s Drafts from the NPC, which allows you to assume the appearance of some nearby scenery. Use this to fool your opponents.
Invades in Chaos Hunger are as chastised as they seem. There are two strategies to be successful in a Chaos Hunger invasion:
- Kill inquisitors.
- Get the host to open up a gift, which may be helpful or harmful to them.
The Old Annex, which stands underneath the Temple of Eleven, has a NPC for the Chaos Hunger faction. This is located in the Dreadstone Peak area, and you''ll need to defeat a Named Mage to get to this area.
In Treachers'' Grotto, you may buy Unspeakable Flesh from them to begin invasions. You may also gift Unspeakable Bone Boxes to those who invade.
