Following Redfall''s and Starfield''s start, Microsofts two major blockbusters for the year, and the release slate for the second half of 2022 might seem particularly barren. Pop quiz: Have you ever been paying attention to the Switch?

As my colleague Ethan Gach pointed out in February, the Switch has long been poised to have a solid 2022. In the intermittent months, Nintendo has only secured the consoles promising position.

So far, Nintendo has had a great year. It started 2022 off with Pokemon Legends: Arceus, a Pokemon spin-off that is so popular in terms of sales. In February, Square Enix released Triangle Strategy, a deliciously stylish tactics game, exclusively on Switch. In April, Nintendos own Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which Kotaku already rated one of the best games of the year. That followed, in April, by Switch Sports, a comeback of perhaps the biggest single trend to

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, a musou game about teens who punch dragons, and Mario Strikers: Battle League are some of the first games in two years to actually make soccer look cool. Captain Tsubasa, but most of your friends are scrambles.

Six hot-ticket exclusives are typically a large enough lineup to provide a major platform for the year, but Nintendo has even more in common. Splatoon 3, the sunniest take on a post-apocalyptic future, follows on September 9 (In terms of smaller-scale games, the HD-2D Live a Live remake is also planned for July.)

The tactics crossover event Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope has been promised by Ubisoft by the end of the publishers fiscal year, which will conclude next April. (Sparks of Hope was previously given a release date, but the mainline Pokemon games will not release date much longer. If Pokemon comes out that month, chances are it will be the biggest holiday season.

As developers discover the implications of, yknow, working in a freakin pandemic, the ever-changing release schedule has been both anticipated and completely understandable. Most major games this year, from those already out (Horizon Forbidden West, Elden Ring), to those expected (God of War Ragnarok, Gotham Knights, and Marvels Midnight Suns) have been affected by a certain delay.

Nintendo, however, is not surprised by such delays, having recently pushed what was calling The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild''s sequel into 2023. That''s why the games'' previous versions may be pushed back, but those that have no inked release dates are also less of a guarantee. However, if these pieces fall into place as planned, it will not my Xbox or PS5 that will have the most playtime this year.
