As the end to A New Era made some bold moves and surprising revelations, the future remains in an exciting balance of departures and arrivals. It appears that almost every corner of Julian Fellowes'' dramatic universe is touched by the events that transpired, and there are some exciting developments for the future.
It''s time to go deep into spoilers for the Downton Abbey: A New Era ending. If you want to learn more without giving anything away, go to our official review of A New Era. Otherwise, you might start digging into the ending of the film, and what happened in the heartfelt conclusion to the latest chapter in the Crawley family''s legacy.
What Happened At The End Of Downton Abbey 2?
Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Downton (Dame Maggie Smith) naturally provides the foundations for the family''s future. This year, Downton survived the filming of The Gambler, the (formerly) silent picture that Jack Barber (Hugh Dancy) and his cast, and his crew met to produce.
The moment we all feared arrived was just as Downton Abbey: A New Era strikes its audience with warm and fuzzy footage. While this wasnt a surprise, Violet passes away at Downton, surrounded by her family. While this was not a surprise, watching everything unfold was still devastating. In the aftermath of this devastating loss, the future of Downton has some really simple paths it can take down.
Lady Mary Is Now The Lady Of Downton
Lady Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery) is now the ship captain, as well as Violet Crawley and Robert. With the knowledge her family has challenged her to hand down for this eventuality, Mary is now the lady of Downton Abbey.
Lady Mary may or may not be sidelined for future adventures, as running the family estate might hinder her from joining on the New York trip the cast used for Downton Abbey 3s story. Even though Mary''s loyalty to her grandmother may hammer it into her head that the only person she really trusts to keep the ship running correctly is herself.
Who Will Eventually Inherit The Villa In France?
Despite Madame Montmirail''s initial drama, defending the Dowager Countess inheritance of the villa in question, Downton Abbey 2 is told that the will of the late Montmirail patriarch is fulfilled. This means that, as stipulated by Violet Crawley, her great-granddaughter, Sybbie Branson, will eventually inherit this property.
Sybbie, the daughter of Thomas Branson (Allen Leech) and the late Sybil Crawley (Jessica Brown Findlay), was the only great-grandchild without a property of their own. Despite Violet''s changes, the next generation of Downton Abbeys central family will not have to debate who is responsible for the whole dynasty. At the same time, the distance might be ripe for time jumps that progress.
The Household Staff at Downton is about to change.
As the film adaptation of Downton Abbey: A New Era unfolds, Thomas Barrow (Robert James-Collier) seems to be unlucky in love. Out of the blue, that changed with the invitation of Guy Dexter to become his boyfriend/butler, in a moment when the world was much less accepting of queer romance.
This is the first of many changes that appear to be underway for household workers in Downton Abbey as a result of quite a few romances. Phyllis Baxter (Raquel Cassidy) finally proposes to him, and becomes even a screenwriter, although Beryl Patmore (Paul Copley) may have found love with Albert Mason. Retirements, employment, and pure love are all in the works, as a result of the roster of Downtons professional workers being eliminated.
Downton Abbeys Butler once moreFor the time being
Lady Mary Talbot, who is not Thomas Barrow''s only butler, makes an important decision. Once again, Mary calls Charles Carson (Jim Carter) out of retirement, and writes, "This hiring is only temporary," and for as long as Carson needs to train young Andy Parker (Michael C. Fox) to succeed him.
Charles Carson is likely to be back on track when it comes to health issues that were introduced in Season 6, but Carson first retired so Thomas might take over. Once Andy has the ropes of running the staff, you can bet Charlie will be back to his gardening, with his beloved wife Elsie (Phyllis Logan) on his side.
Future Complications Could Be posed by Coras Health Scare
A massive curveball was thrown in Downton Abbey, where a New Era saw Crawley''s family matriarch Cora, the Countess of Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern), looking as if she was fatally ill herself. Fortunately, by the time this plotline came to an conclusion, it was confirmed that pernicious anemia was the cause plaguing her. As a family physician/friend Dr. Richard Clarkson (David Robb) was included
While writer/creator Julian Fellowes used this strategy to create the sequel to Downton Abbey, it feels like a convenient trap door. Just as Dame Maggie Smiths'' last moments in the previous Downton film set up her eventual exit, the love story may have just found a contributing cause to its conclusion. At the very least, its a reminder that mortality wreaks havoc on even the Crawley family; as if Season 3 did not already teach us that lesson in a way that former
Is Lady Marys Marriage On Borrowed Time?
The following question in the post-Downton Abbey 2 future is perhaps the fate of Lady Mary Talbot''s marriage. In reality, Matthew Goode was too busy being a part of The Offer cast on Paramount+ to reprise his role as husband Henry Talbot. That was made so evident when director Jack Barber and Lady Mary came dangerously close to what seemed like a politely illicit relationship.
Mary still had a moment that made her wonder whether Henry loves traveling more than his marriage. Although it seemed that their marriage ended his cavalier automobile adventure, it seems that there is a possibility Lady Mary Talbot might divorce in the future.
Thats only speculation based on what was seen in Downton Abbey: A New Era, though how many times can Lady Mary be sidelined by Henrys voluminous life before she puts her foot down? At this point, one cannot really tell, as the most recent chapter in the Crawley family history is currently in theaters. If Downton Abbey 3 happens, these questions and more might only find some answers, and we hope this time we have enough tissues.
