Taylor Sheridan is rapidly becoming one of the most productive producers on television. Yesterday, it was announced that he will direct the first two episodes of a new series The Bass Reeves Story. The six-episode series will tell the story of Bass Reeves, the first black deputy U.S. Marshall in the American West, with David Oyelowo leading the way.

Sheridan began acting as a producer known for his roles in the popular Sons of Anarchy and Veronica Mars. When he wrote and directed the critically acclaimed Sicario and Hell or High Water, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award nomination for original screenplay. He also directed and co-written and directed Wind River, which starred Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner. From there he began developing and programming the western drama Yellowstone. The Bass Reeves Story will follow the lawman''s life from his birth into slavery to all his accomplishments as a deputy marshal. In real life, Reeves escaped and lived with Native American tribes until slavery was abolished. He was eventually recruited to serve as a deputy due to him knowing the land and understanding several Native American languages.

After reading the scripts, Sheridan called Oyelowo to ask if he would serve as a director of the series. The official announcement came during a fundraising round to commemorate Paramount+''s release in the United Kingdom. Oyelowo told Deadline:

The reality is that he is one of the world''s finest storytellers. My whole thing is that weve must tell a story worthy of that history, but that he is one of those very rare individuals, and that Ive worked with a few of them, and that he is one of the very few ones who can do that. It''s a big deal.

Sheridan executive producer will be directing alongside Oyelowo, Jessica Oyelowo, David Permut, David Glasser, Ron Burkle, and Bob Yari. MTV Entertainment Studios, the Oyelowos Yoruba Saxon production company, and 101 Studios are some of the companies in charge of producing the series.
