What happens to your old loot boxes and credits in Overwatch 2. Answered ...

After the release of Overwatch 2 in October, you may be wondering what happens to your unopened loot boxes, either from disenchanting duplicate cosmetics. What happens to the different currencies that will be coming to the Blizzards team''s FPS shooter?

What happens to loot boxes?

Overwatch 2 will be moving away from the poorly-known loot box model and over to the currently widespread Battle pass reward track system. However, during the Reddit AMA, the players'' loot boxes will be just opened and transferred to the new game.

We are not transitioning loot boxes to Overwatch 2, but will notify you immediately. All unopened loot boxes will be automatically opened with your account receiving all of them.

Many players have followed up looking into what this means for seasonal or event loot boxes. Remember that those loot boxes required the appropriate event to be active and contained at least one seasonal or event item when opened. However, it has been confirmed that those loot boxes will follow the same rules as those used during the game transitions to Overwatch 2.

What happens to credits and other currency?

Overwatch had three additional types of currency that have been a source of speculation among the playerbase: credit cards, OWL tokens, and competitive points. With the changes in the economic structure of OW2, and the announcement of a new, paid currency, there was a concern that all the original currency will be lost.

During the same Reddit AMA, the developers discussed the possibility of carrying the current currencies to OW2, but it is still too early to say how they will perform in relation to the new systems.

Before Overwatch 2 will be available in October, please provide a brief explanation. Those existing currencies (credits, OWL tokens, and competitive points) will be added to Overwatch 2., but our new virtual currency will be the main currency, and there will be things in OW2, which will not be purchasable with those OW1 credits.

There is still a timeframe until October to learn how they intend to consolidate all of these currencies and what purpose and acquisition method will apply to each. For the time being, it appears that there will not be any overlap between these currencies that we have previously identified. We will continue to follow the development and update you accordingly.
