The Black Phone is rated for a good Rotten Tomatoes score, according to reviewers ...

The Black Phone, by Ethan Hawke, has exceeded expectations, with reviews achieving an impressive 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film, directed by Doctor Strange''s Scott Derrickson, is based on Joe Hill''s 2004 short story of the same name. It follows a youngster named Finney Shaw (Mason Thames), who is able to communicate with his previous kidnapper via a disconnected phone.

After 28 reviews, the film received huge praise for the world premiere at Fantastic Fest in September 2021, and on Tuesday (June 21) it had a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

This score has dropped slightly, but ending up in the mid-80s is quite impressive, particularly considering the film''s genre.

Marisa Mirabal of IndieWire described The Black Phone as a "sleek, stressful, and violent slice of horror," which captures the audience''s emotions as quickly as the film''s antagonist kidnaps children in broad daylight.

"Every aspect of the film is emotionally arresting and grapples with everyday anxieties with razor-sharp precision," she said.

IGN''s Amelia Emberwing wrote that the film "taught to exceed extremely high expectations in nearly every aspect."

"The writing/directing team puts personal traumas on full display while expertly demonstrating the difficulties of childhood in the 1970s and the very real monsters of our world," she said, adding that the performances of child actors Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw have taken the already tight narrative to new heights."

Critics praised Derrickson''s direction, who left Doctor Strange 2 in a hurry due to creative differences before filming.

"Derrickson and his crew sat down a neat little horror concept from a rather short short story and were able to expand it in ways that both make sense and don''t feel like fillers," says Eric Vespe of Slash Film.

The Black Phone will be available in cinemas on June 24, 2022.
