In a new trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, Chris Hemsworth splits ...

Taika Waititis'' films in the Thor series have adopted a straight forward approach. There is an emphasis on neon coloring and a sense of humor akin to many action comedy shows from the 1980s, and the new trailer, which is now available on Thursday, will include the 1987 Guns N Roses classic Sweet Child O Mine.

The other 80s-inspired part of the trailer was able to catch my attention, though: Chris Hemsworths pretending to do the splits. We see Thor jumping up in the air to intercept two speeding vehicles attempting to fly towards him, putting them in place with just the power of his legs.

This is what Van Damme made in his movies, but this is evidently a stitched together CG effect, a tactic Marvel productions depend on heavily. The homage is lovely, but it lacks the charm and character.

Van Damme is one of the great performers of his generation at manipulating his body in fun and stimulating ways, and it feels like a wasted opportunity to recreate some of that magic, if the reference is what they were going for.

Weve discussed how Van Dammes Lionheart is in our list of the best martial arts movies you can watch at home, and a scarier Van Damme in Universal Soldier: Reckoning is on our list of the finest thrillers you can watch at home. Bloodsport, featured in the image above, is an all-time classic that you can watch for free on Tubi or Pluto TV, and Sudden Death is a zany, silly moment in which Van Damme fights the Pittsburgh Penguins.

This is my personal plea to Disney: Chris Hemsworth should actually learn how to handle the splits! If you want to bring back that 80s action star energy, do it all the way back.
