Treyarch has had a lot of trouble getting fans interested in the Dark Aether story. While the Cold War vs. Russia entities in Call of Duty: Vanguard are interesting, the gameplay has been so unpopular, that few have paid attention to it. However, the release of the Call of Duty: Vanguard''s first round-based map has prompted fans to think again.
While many are satisfied with a traditional survival map in Call of Duty: Vanguard, others are stunned by the large plot twist in Shi No Numa Reborn. In one of the maps radios, Gabriel Krafft name-drops Scarlett Rhodes'' father Alistair. The Sentinel Artifact, a key item from the Chaos story, appears at the end of the quest. Treyarchs'' decision to combine the Chaos story and the Dark Aether story is a game changer, which will increase
Before Call of Duty: Vanguard, the Chaos Story was standalone.
This was a clear departure from the Aether timeline for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies. Treyarch did not pull its punches with this aspect of its new narrative, especially as players battled Odins eye and learned that Medusa was the narrative''s main villain.
The exact tone used by Treyarch and the mythological focus in the Dark Aether universe is entirely unknown. Perhaps figures like Medusa might be retconned into Dark Aether entities, or perhaps Treyarch might be revisiting the concept of a multiverse once more. While this may be a bit messy with Alistair Rhodes'' narrative, other universes may be a good way to explain these story differences. However, there is always a possibility this is just a different version of Eddie, much like
Treyarch may also extend its time to Chaos Story fans.
The fact that it is actually happening is enthralling. Unlike Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold Wars, Treyarch could do something it simply could not do in a more grounded story, and fights with mythological creatures like werewolves were a nice change of pace. Unique locations like Ancient Greece were a joy to experience, and weapons like the Primordial Hands were fun to use. Hopefully, more unique maps will be seen once more as part of the Chaos story.
The true reason for this shocking use of Chaos elements is that fans may finally have a ticket closure. Unlike previous reports, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies as a whole was unpopular, but Treyarch needed to shift its efforts to focus on the Cold War development. This left Shaw and Bruno worried, leaving Alistair paralyzing, and Diego all on his own.
Treyarch may be laying the groundwork for their potential return on the Chaos crew, although a standalone Call of Duty Zombies game is supposedly a possibility to take on the Chaos story. Through hidden radios and documents, fans may get a good ending for a story that never imagined it would be successful. While it is odd to combine the Chaos story and the Dark Aether narrative together, it is better than leaving the former unfinished.
Call of Duty: Vanguard is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
