The comics for the Umbrella Academy are so much more improbable than the one on the other

The comics for the Umbrella Academy are so much more improbable than the one on the other ...

The Netflix world of Umbrella Academy is strange. It may, nevertheless, be much more complex. Gerard Way and Gabriel Bas'' three-season superhero series is loosely adapted from the same name, which is even more maximalist and idiosyncratic than the show.

In the video, there is still a villainous talking fish and cartoon-masked assassins, but their world(s) are quite similar to ours. In many ways, the comics'' world is a whole different. Farmers and corporations are tasked with transporting food, but they are popular transportation modes. soda is also available at a vending service that allows you to speak and understand other languages.

Although attempting to do a complete rewrite of the comics might be as awful as the Umbrellas, I cant help but wonder sometimes what it would be like if the show included some of the comics weirder plots and world-building. Because they get well and truly weird heres just a taste:

The following contains spoilers from the first three volumes of Umbrella Academycomics, but there are no spoilers for Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, which, in turn, is named Viktor, but the comics character is named Vanya, and is later described as such.

Zombie-Robot Gustave Eiffel is the first villain the Academy fights.

The villains in the Umbrella Academy comics are a trip. They may even be my favorite part of the entire series, and this is a perfect example of why.

When the Eiffel Tower starts throwing visitors off the top, the siblings have their first villain encounter in the Apocalypse Suite. Diego is able to take down Zombie-Robot Gustave Eiffel with the classic knife-to-head maneuver, but Eiffel still manages to execute the towers launch sequence. Because, obviously, the Eiffel Tower is also a spaceship.

When Allison hears a rumor that Lincoln was assassinated, the Eiffel Tower isn''t the only monument the Umbrella Academy fights, however. In Dallas, they close the murderous rampage, manifesting a John Wilkes Booth memorial to take down the Lincoln one.

Dr. Terminal, a hypnotist who saw an Allison doppelganger in half, is among the other villains facing the Umbrella Academy fight.

Hargreeves monocle is magic

Luther believes that the fact that Hargreeves monocle is missing is a significant step in discovering his murder, which was not a murder. However, aside from the monocles red herring moment in the early episodes, the Netflix drama hasnt played any role beyond being quite the fashion statement for Hargreeves.

In the comics, the Hargreeves monocle is actually magic or at least so scientifically advanced that it may as well be magic. When you look through the monocle, you''re essentially able to see the truth of a person, such as Five seeing the horrifying experiment Pogo at Hargreeves lab or being able to tell that Vanya was The White Violin even though her body had been completely transformed.

Diego and Vanya were in a punk band with a chimp.

When Diego and Vanya were still angsty youngsters, they formed a punk band called the Prime-8s, which nicknamed Body. (In the movies, talking chimpanzees are just a regular part of society.) Hargreeves pushed not to go and agreed that after the nights show, the siblings would leave the Academy and dedicate themselves to the Prime-8s full time.

Diego was a no-show, having left to fight a mime gang instead. This was the final straw for Body and the band, but they later left only one album as their legacy, called I Don'' Wanna Kill the President. Both Diego and Body were still in touch, as they eventually become one of the cops Diego works with as a vigilante.

The Hotel Oblivion is actually a space prison for supervillains.

The third season of the show focuses largely on Hotel Oblivion, but the comics version of the hotel is somewhat lighter, given its proximity to the Scientific Man (a clear riff on Watchmens Doctor Manhattan), and the entire prison apparently doubles as a cosmic trap for an eldritch tentacle monster. I''m sorry for the loss.

Fives DNA is bound with that of assassins

Five is a masterful at killing people. Astoundingly so in the presentation, thats the result of his natural abilities combined with his Commission training. In the scripts, there is also a more sinister explanation for how Five became the world''s finest assassin.

In the video above, Temps Aeternalis, the comics version of The Commission, altered his DNA by linking it with the of famous assassins. After Five murdered without a care, he was amazed at this revelation, although it did not stop him from bragging about his souped-up DNA.

Five and Luther are twins

The Umbrella Academy''s new season explores family dynamics and definitions. I initially thought the show was correct, but I regretted that it had meant that the series would have dropped one of the most important twists from the comics.

Allison meets up with Five to assassinate JFK, posing as Jackie O, and utilizing her powers to de-escalate the president. However, Allison does this by extorting her from the Temps Aeternalis.

To be clear, the timeline preservation organization had gone back to before the siblings were born and placed a pistol to the head of the only one of their mothers who was carrying twins Luther and Five, although it''s unclear whether Allison would have died if it was only to save Five. Even if it had meant losing his morals, she would have believed the tortured.

Luther and Diego go to outer space on a road trip.

While weve got some space things in the series, such as Luther''s tenure on the moon, and the fact that Hargreeves is an alien, the comics are far more space-heavy. In Hotel Oblivion, Luther and Diego track down Hargreeves'' old spaceship and head off into afterspace, a part of the universe that doesn''t follow the rules of science.

However, discovering barely trodden frontiers encounters unexpected challenges. When the brothers venture outside the ship, they encounter a merge sweep and their bodies and minds begin to unravel the horrifying and potentially permanent ordeal thats only stopped when they are able to find the one thing they have in common: their love for each other. (Cue awws.)

Klaus, Diego, and Luther try to keep the Vietnam War going, rebuilding an ancient ruler.

In Dallas, Klaus, Luther, and Diego, they decided to go back in time to assist Five in the killing of JFK. Unfortunately, they accidentally arrived three years early and in Vietnam. Luther spends the majority of that time throwing himself a pity party in the jungle, while Diego becomes a US sergeant.

Klaus and Diego devise a strategy to end the war by resurrecting Emperor Gia Long, the founder of the Nguyen dynasty, and, in the comics, a dark arts expert. In the end of the day, the emperor starts attacking everyone in sight, meaning the brothers have to kill the mummy they had just resurrected.

Following one plans failure, Klaus, Diego, and Luther immediately reverse their original vision to stop the massacre. It turns out that out of running a bar, having a baby with someone! Klaus had been working with a young Pogo on constructing a television. The siblings then use the machine to travel to Dallas, removing him.

Five is serenaded by a Marilyn Monroe chimp

These are just two rather inconsequential panels from Dallas and they aren''t even that weird by Umbrella Academystandards. I just wanted an excuse to share these horrified photos with you all.
