Developers from Blizzard Entertainment met with Reddit on Wednesday to discuss Overwatch 2, the free-to-play semi-sequel to the hero shooter that will launch this October. Overwatch 2''s developer, including game director Aaron Keller, answered some tricky questions about the game''s future, including how it will affect existing credits and loot boxes in Overwatch, but did so.
Overwatch 2 has five things to be aware of, especially if you are an existing Overwatch player.
All your unopened loot boxes will be automatically opened for you in October, but the short answer is that all your unspent currency will be transferred to Overwatch 2, and all your unopened loot boxes will be automatically opened for you. If your old Overwatch currency is already locked, there is no reason to put it on hold.
Before Overwatch 2 will be held on October 11, Jon Spector, the business leader and vice president of Overwatch, said. Nevertheless, those existing currencies (credits, OWL tokens, and competitive points) will come with you into Overwatch 2. We are not transitioning loot boxes into Overwatch 2, and any unopened loot boxes will be automatically opened with your account receiving all the contents directly.
Spector further said that OW1 credits are brought with you to OW2, but that our new virtual currency will be the main currency, and there will be things in OW2, which will not be purchasable with those OW1 credits.
When Overwatch 2 opens in early access in October, players will receive access to three new heroes (Sojourn, Junker Queen, and an unannounced support character), a range of hero reworks, six new maps, a new game mode called Push, and the games'' first battle pass. That''s it, for example, it has been nearly three years since Blizzard''s latest hero, Echo, was added to the roster.
Here''s what game director Aaron Keller told when asked about the unexpectedly small number of new heroes from day one:
For the purpose, Overwatch 2 was initially divided between the PvE and the PvP sides of the game, and the way it was scheduled was to finish most sections of the game once the game was ready to ship. To be clear, there was no secret vault of completed heroes and other content that were holding the game for future seasons. For us it is also important to start shipping content as early as possible, rather than holding it to a box.
Weve expanded and restructured the team in order to stay on track throughout the long term. We are more than three times the size we were at the start. We have large plans for the game, beyond new heroes, maps, and game modes, and to accomplish these by simultaneously developing content. For example, the season 2 hero was in many stages of playtesting for the next three heroes, one of whom is supported!
Although Overwatch was strictly a multiplayer game, the sequel will bring with it a single-player multiplayer and cooperative story-driven, mission-based content. By 2023, Blizzards hopes to launch the PvE version of Overwatch 2, and the developer did not share much about the other half of the game during its Reddit AMA.
Keller argued that Overwatch 2 will launch early in access to indicate that this is just the start of a lot of new things coming to the game, and that the PvE campaign will be released as part of the Blizzards live service approach.
We are not ready to talk about our PvE plans yet, but it''s really important for us to make sure people understand the theme and the subject. According to Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie, the lead narrative designer and writer of Overwatch 2. We are working on new bios and have other very cool intentions that will surprise even long-term fans.
Overwatch 2, according to Gavin Winter, a systems designer, was added to a list of advanced technology for the PvE campaign component of the game, which is continuing to be useful in the sequel. (In the event you havent been keeping up, maps such as Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, and other 2CP maps will not be played in core game modes in Overwatch 2, with Blizzard citing player dissatisfaction.)
Overwatch, as-is, isn''t a particularly social game. However, it might change.
We are looking at adding additional social systems to Overwatch 2, and a guild system is nearing the top of the list for us, Keller said. A similar feature is a fantastic opportunity and something was really interested in, but it is a huge success, not only for large sections of our team but several other departments at Blizzard. Although this feature has been significant, it''s too early to discuss specifics or when it might come out.
Keller said that the Overwatch team is beginning to examine in-game tournaments for the sequel.
Moira, Symmetra, and Brigitte will all see changes during Overwatch 2''s upcoming beta and when the game goes live. Moira will also get unspecified additional benefit during the beta. Symmetra''s do-it-a-rework will increase her mobility and enable her to improve her performance thanks to the faster secondary fire projectile speed, according to senior hero Josh Noh.
Despite what a prototype menu screen for Overwatch 2 showed last week, Blizzard stated that the Assault map Hanamura is not being transformed into a Payload map. It would be a massive effort, but it is not one we have ever undertaken.
