A tangled spine-chiller from John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning) is your classic woman-on-the-run thriller. Jessica (Jules Willcox), a recent widow, is in the midst of moving. If that wasnt enough stress, a creepy man (Marc Menchaca) appears to be following her on the road. What follows is a tightly crafted thriller with excellent performances, excellent direction, and enough tension to keep your heart pounding

Alone is now available on Hulu.

Christine, a high-school horror film about a nerd who falls in love with a haunted automobile, is an amazing Stephen King adaptation and a standout in John Carpenters'' consistently excellent filmography.

Arnie (Keith Gordon) is an unpopular California high schooler with just one friend, a well-known football player named Dennis (John Stockwell, who in many ways is the emotional core of the film), and when they encounter a broken-down old Plymouth Fury, Arnie realizes it. He becomes fascinated with the car, named Christine, and human and vehicle both become jealous of anyone who might end their time together. It''s a great time for everybody, except Arnies human loved ones.

Christine''s practical benefits deserve special recognition here. It''s wonderful to see it tens of thousands of years later.

Christine is at its best populated with fantastic high school archetypes that are only subverted enough to keep things interesting. PV

Christine is now available on Netflix.

Cure, a 1997 horror film directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, is a Japanese detective who is frustrated by an inexplicable rash of seemingly unconnected murders that nevertheless appear to be connected, even though none of the perpetrators knew each other, and is put on hold. In Cure, violence is less a form of premeditation or passion, resulting in displeasure in innocent bystanders, rather than ignoring why they did so in the first place. Toussaint

Cure is available on the Criterion Channel.

Deep Red

This beautifully shot slasher is a mix of mystery, terror, and lots and lots of murder. Giallo movies are, by design, utterly complicated, but they also have some psychic powers for good measure. Deep Red is incredibly addictive to watch, no matter how brutal most of its cast dies. Austen Goslin

Deep Red is available on Shudder and AMC Plus for free with ads on Pluto TV and Vudu, or for free with a library card on Hoopla and Kanopy.

The Empty Man

The film''s main story follows a man named James Lasombra (James Badge Dale) as he searches for a missing girl. While on the one hand, Prior notices a legend of a shadowy figure called the Empty Man, who stalks anyone who has seen him for three days before he strikes. Prior then clears the sentence out into something truly special, bringing in a cult who might be supernatural. Despite the fact that none of these connections make sense on paper

HBO Max has a limited available streaming program for The Empty Man.

Eyes Without a Face

The critically-acclaimed 1960 film by Georges Franjus is a masterclass in supernatural fantasy fiction. An unsettling tale about a plastic surgeon (played by Pierre Brasseur) who kidnaps young women and performs surgery on them to try and replace his daughter''s face, however, the film is quite striking and beautiful. Scobs'' iconic face mask was later referenced in the role of the also-excellent Holy Motors decades later. PV

On HBO Max and The Criterion Channel, Eyes Without a Face are available for viewing.

Izzy, a youngster who lives isolated in the woods with only her mother, believes she has a terminal illness and cant be anywhere else. That is, the film delicately balances Izzy''s perspective and her mothers, as a movie showcasing both the struggle of adolescence and the inherent fear of trying to raise a child. But the greatest benefit of Hellbender''s is how stunning it looks.

Hellbender, a filmmaking firm established in 2022, is an early contender for the most visually striking horror film. Directors John and Zelda Adams and Toby Poser, who directed and directed the film, are adept at soothing beauty and creeping terror, sifting effortlessly between the two in order to match their characters'' anxieties and discoveries.

Hellbender is now available on Shudder and AMC Plus.

The Hellbound Heart, a 1986 film adaptation, reveals Larry''s recently deceased brother, Sean Chapman, with whom Julia had a previous affair. The Lament Configuration, which is often referred to as Cenobites, is resurrected by a drop of blood that was discovered on the floor of the houses attic. This is why the 1987 directorial debut is a must-watch for horror fans.

Hellraiser is available on Amazon Prime Video and Shudder for free with ads on Tubi, or for free with a library card on Hoopla.

The Host

The Host was a follow-up to the smash-end serial killer drama Memories of Murder, which was a crucial and commercial success. It was the highest-grossing South Korean film ever after its release, and was nominated for the Asian Film Awards and the Blue Dragon Film Awards.

A huge mutated fish monster emerges and kidnaps a young girl as a result of the destruction of chemicals on the Han River. In Bongs'' interesting filmography, the Host doubles as a powerful counteract of US intervention, ecological catastrophes, and much more.

The Host is available on Tubi and Pluto TV for free, but also with a library card on Hoopla or Kanopy.

Let the Right One In

A 12-year-old Swedish boy discovers a friend in a vampire who looks roughly his age, but is actually an old vampire permanently trapped in the body of a young child. Each viewing is kaleidoscopic, each of which reveals something different than the previous. The first time I saw the film, I was a pessimistic college student, and why growing up is a mixed blessing. This past year, I was much more focused on the girls'' relationship with her caretaker, who sacrifices everything for

The film was adapted from John Ajvide Lindqvist''s 2004 novel of the same name, which inspired not only this Swedish film, but a 2010 American adaptation, a comic-book prequel, and two stage plays. The latter has its own roots, and it eventually had a run at St. Anns Warehouse in 2015. Few books are so exciting. So I suppose Im recommending it just as much as the film. Chris Plante

On Hulu and Showtime, let the Right One In is available for free with a library card on Hoopla and Kanopy.

James Wan could have steamed in chips to build another heavy-emotion franchise-starter in a tense 90s direct-to-video pastiche, which he became a turducken. Instead, Madison (Annabelle Wallis) is confronted with psychotic episodes, and theeeens her revealed.

The Pixies Where Is My Mind''s melodramatic cover, while reveling in horror concepts until the final stages, the main twists of Malignant are some of the most satisfying lunacy of the year, and the acrobatic actor Marina Mazepa brings it all home in a gruesome ballet. I will not explain anything more out of fear of spoilers just get on the Malignant train. Wan put his dreams (nightmare?) on screen for us all to enjoy.

Malignant is available on HBO Max.

Night of the Living Dead

The first piece of George A. Romeros, which developed the modern zombie film in the United States, was developed, photographed, and edited on a shoestring budget, which only adds to the eerie atmosphere and grounded terror. In this film, a group of survivors hide out in an abandoned house in western Pennsylvania at the start of a zombie apocalypse. These internal conflicts stemming from disagreements on how to handle their precarious situation.

This film, which was never copyrighted, was in the public domain because of a mistake by the original theatrical distributor, which included jaw-dropping (and stomach-churning) practical effects. PV

On HBO Max, Peacock, and Paramount Plus, Night of the Living Dead is available.

Pulse, a 2001 Japanese horror thriller, is one of the most terrifying films I''ve ever seen. Set near the turn of the century, it follows a group of Japanese teenagers who, in the wake of their loved ones'' unexpected death, began experiencing strange visions and unsettling encounters a mysterious floppy disk. Pulse has been widely recognized as one of the greatest internet horror films of the 21st century, with several critics and fans citing it as the definitive internet horror film. Be sure to

Pulse is now available for viewing on AMC Plus or for free with ads on Tubi and Vudu.

Rigor Mortis

Rigor Mortis, a down-on-his-luck actor who arrives in a run-down hotel and immediately commits suicide. From there things only get weirder and the monsters in the hotel become even more deadly.

Rigor Mortis is available on Peacock for free with ads on Tubi and Vudu.

The Ring

The early 2000s were a fascinating time when studios spent tens of millions on horror blockbusters. Another example of Ringu, a Japanese film, is a unique and worthwhile experience on its own, although it lacks the empathy and scares of the original, and it is a completely different version from the previous. AG has made a point, claiming that the remake is well-known for its powerful sense of haunting dread and its superior value.

With advertising on Pluto TV, The Ring is available on Paramount Plus or for free.

Saint Maud

Saint Maud is a kind of reverse possession story based on a young nurse who, following her patient''s death, has become a devout Roman Catholic and receives a new degree as an in-home nurse for the elderly and infirm. Although the ending is a shambled, the film continues to engage in emotional disarray, revealing that she has made every mistake possible.

On Amazon Prime Video and Paramount Plus, Saint Maud is available for viewing.

Sinister, a true-crime thriller, follows Ellison Oswalt and his family as they move into a new house that may or may not be haunted by a demon. It''s perhaps the best part of Sinister, given the ability to carefully portray the monster in some ways, but it is also equally appealing to the audience. Oswalt, however, is a fan of his excellently dark depictions of the killings that surround the movies.

Peacock will find Sinister.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Tobe Hoopers'' 1974 masterpiece was purchased at the box office for around $140,000, followed by a group of friends who were hunted by a family of cannibals in the middle of Texas, and is a chilling, violent fever dream that has permanent lodged in the minds of those who watch it.

Eight films have been published, including a Netflix version in 2022, but the original is a rather complex encapsulation of pure chaos and terror. At a brief 83 minutes, the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is well worth the small time effort to catch up on one of the most powerful horror movies ever made. PV

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is available on Shudder, Showtime, and for free with ads on Tubi.

Train to Busan

Imagine if, instead of eating cockroaches and throwing off off ax-wielding thugs on their way to the one-percenter front carriage, the passengers on the Snowpiercer train sent off zombies. OK, stop imagining: Train to Busan is better than anything youll get. Propulsive, bloody, and glimmering with the dark whimsy particular to Korean cinema, artist-turned-live-action-director Yeon Sang-hos

Train to Busan is available on Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, Shudder, for free with ads on Tubi, Pluto TV, and The Roku Channel, and for free with a library card on Hoopla.

Youre Next

Youre Next, a home invasion slasher, was a smash hit for director Adam Wingard (Netflixs Death Note, Godzilla vs. Kong) and writer Simon Barrett, who later teamed up for The Guest. When family members are invited to celebrate a wedding anniversary at a remote estate, things turn in a bloody direction when violent attackers wearing animal masks and crossbows start killing them one by one.

Ti West, Amy Seimetz, and Larry Fessenden star in the acting roles in the slasher film. PV
