Beginner's Guide to 3D Platformer Games

Beginner's Guide to 3D Platformer Games ...

Super Mario 64 has changed video games forever. While it wasn''t the first 3D platforming challenge, it is still a model for 3D gaming, paving the way for decades of fantastic 3D platformers.

Although many of these genres of games may be confusing, 3D platformers may provide more accessible titles to newcomers, along with some really annoying ones. Here are several great suggestions if you love this genre of gaming and want to discover some new titles, but don''t expect them to be too expensive.

Geoffrey Martin has updated the game on June 27th. Many of these are fantastic games to try out, although they are generally quite accessible. These games are usually accessible to beginners, while keeping you moving, jumping, and collecting. If you are new to the 3D platforming industry, here are some suggestions.

15 Super Mario 64

1996''s original release

Nintendo 64''s platform

Super Mario 64 certainly requires no introduction, as it was the primary competitor to the majority of 3D platforming games. This Nintendo 64 outing took the portly plumber all over the Mushroom Kingdom, but this time, in whole 3D. While the game may seem quite archaic by the standards of modern gaming, it was back in the late 90s.

If for some reason you have missed out on this treasure of a game, then you should be sure to remedy it right away. This may just be the best game to play for newcomers to the 3D platforming foray, though all of this game, including the fantastic level design, is fantastic.

14 Yooka-Laylee

2017''s Original Release

Platforms for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, PC

Playtonic Games, a team of renowned innovators and designers of Banjo-Kazooie, introduced Yooka-Laylee to this page. However, this bird and bear duo game is also well-known among those who are new to the 3D platforming industry.

Yooka-Laylee, a lizard and bat club, must navigate through a range of complex phases in order to avoid the evil Capital B. One of the best reasons for this is because the game introduces tonics, a set of options that allow you to customize the game to your liking once you have unlocked a certain number of them.

13 Poi

2017''s Original Release

Platforms: Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC

Poi is likely to be one of the 3d platformers you haven''t heard of. Despite its exemplary, polished, and engaging performance, this indie title deserves a lot of attention, mostly due to its exuberance, fluid movement, strong level design and a playful hub area.

Poi takes you on a journey through a magical world as one of two spit and optimistic protagonists. This exciting 3d platformer takes its time to take you through its excellent platforming, collecting, and upgrading, and also offers a slew of additional, more challenging, bite-sized stages to tackle, and some mini-games thrown in for good measure.

12 Kirby And The Forgotten Land

Kirby and The Forgotten Land is the latest entry on this list, but it deserves to be mentioned as it is charming, fun, and a long journey. Here, Kirby and the Forgotten Land is tasked with exploring various biomes, including retrieving Waddle Dees, and unlocking new powers along the way.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is great for beginners, as it''s not a very complicated platforming game overall. 9 Captain Toad

Original Release 2014
Platforms Wii U, 3DS, Switch

In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, you are confined to the ground, except for certain sections where you can fall down to a lower level. There is no jumping whatsoever, which is a severe departure from the parent game, in which the titular character is known for jumping (Mario''s initial name was even Jumpman).

By solving puzzles and platforming challenges, you''ll travel around each world collecting treasure. The Switch version has a two-player co-op, which allows you to play with your kids, although it''s quite easy for kids to do so without being bored for adults.

It has all of the features of a great platformer: collectibles, extra side challenges, and characters with different abilities. Rehydrated also includes some content that was previously excluded, as well as a multiplayer horde battle mode for an extra challenge.

7 Fall Guys

Original Release 2020
Platforms Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Android, iOS

While many 3D platformers are limited to one or two players, Fall Guys is the exact opposite. In it, you''ll be confronted with several dozen other people, each of whom is battling it out in several rounds of obstacle courses and platforming challenges, with the best moving on and the rest being eliminated. Eventually, there will be one individual chosen as the winner.

Fall Guys is a game for beginners, but there are a few limitations to overcome, all while traversing the tedious and tragic challenge of defeating the other players.

To get into this one, you need not to be an expert in platforming games, as it is widespread access to the masses, with many non-gamers getting involved and having a crush.

6 Pumpkin Jack

Original Release 2020
Platforms Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, iOS

New Super Lucky''s Tale is a new version of Super Lucky''s Tale. Lucky Swiftail is a young fox on a quest to defeat the villainous Jinx. One of Lucky''s abilities is burrowing. There are also traditional side-scrolling ones.

The levels in New Super Lucky''s Tale are bright and welcoming, and the platforming is very enjoyable. The non-linear 3D areas are well designed and easy to navigate, although the 3D levels are small enough for a little exploration. This is a great, well-deserved game for kids.

3 A Hat In Time

Original Release 2017
Platforms Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, macOS, Windows

It''s impossible to describe how underrated A Hat In Time is. This game is powerful and engaging. Cute, well-designed, and just plain fun, A Hat In Time was originally launched in 2017 and funded through Kickstarter. The story follows Hat Kid as she discovers all the Time Pieces missing from her ship. The main hat is kept an eye on the goal, and another can shoot magic blasts.

A Hat in Time is a classic platformer, which includes excellent bosses and thrilling music as she closes in. There are also two rounds of DLC that add whole new worlds to the game, with the Nyakuza Metro also having a particularly cool aesthetic. Longtime players will enjoy playing, and newcomers will want to try out other games like it.

2 Super Mario Odyssey

Original Release 2017
Platforms Nintendo Switch

It should come as no surprise to see Super Mario Odyssey here. As well as other Mario adventures, Cappy can possess other characters with his new hat buddy, giving the hero special abilities. This time, Bowser kidnapped Peach and intends to marry her. Mario will have to travel across several kingdoms and battle dangerous villains (including a dragon!) to save his princess.

Many will argue if Super Mario Odyssey is better than Super Mario 64, but one thing''s certain: Odyssey is an unusual twist in the genre. Soon after, Cappy becomes second nature. This game has a significant number of Power Moons to collect. Where SM64 had 120 Stars, Odyssey is around a thousand people.

From the beautiful Lake Kingdom to the bustling Metro Kingdom, the kingdoms are colorful. Nintendo''s first-party games typically have a high level of quality. Super Mario Odyssey is a great example, enabling you to enter the realm of 3D platforming.

1 Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Original Release 2020
Platforms PS4, PS5

The Little Big Planet series has always been fantastic, but the original series is 2.5D, and this newer title for the PS4 and PS5 is an incredible one at that. It can''t be even perfectly summed up. The character has a good sense of humor.

The quality of this title (especially on the PS5 version) is fantastic, and the textures on objects like carpet and burlap will absolutely blow you away. In typical LBP fashion, the skill in the level design is almost unbelievable, but with these graphics, it''s a whole different level. Plus, the Sackboy adventure is totally accessible to anyone who wants it, but it''s also educational to adults. It has a unique charm and is addictive to play.
