The Apartment

The 1960 comedy Billy Wilders is often considered one of the greatest films ever produced. That reputation is well-deserved.

Bud Baxter (Jack Lemmon) is a solitary business owner who allows executives at his business to use his apartment for their extramarital affairs. However, he believes this will help him stay in the massive insurance company he works at. However, his superiors take advantage of his time and space, leaving him impeachable to sleep in his own bed or his own house.

When Bud falls for an elevator operator in the building (Shirley MacLaine), his desire to build a relationship with her gives him the confidence to try to take control of his life back. However, when Bud discovers that she had an affair with his boss (Fred MacMurray) things become more difficult.

Wilder deftly balances corporate fatigue and newfound love with the outstanding comedic abilities of the cast. The Apartment is one of the films you should see at least once. Pete Volk

Black Dynamite

Michael Jai White is one of the most underappreciated actors of our time, and his blaxploitation parody Black Dynamite is one of the most funniest films of the century. White also co-wrote the hilarious, biting screenplay, filled with silly jokes and cultural commentary. PV

Black Dynamite is now available on HBO Max.

Book Club

Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen are among the authors of this fantastic, romantic comedy. Regardless of what stage of life you find yourself in, each of them is dealing with life challenges. PV

On Paramount Plus, the Book Club may be streamed.

Reggie (Audrey Hepburn) is avoiding reality by discovering something about her husband's murder. To make matters worse, the remaining money is missing, and a lot of malicious people believe Reggie is in charge. Often times, there is no clearer certainty about who, if anyone, Reggie can trust.

Hepburn and Grant, both famously talented and charming actors, are at Charade's most talented and talented levels. In the span of a single scene, Hepburn might transition from pragmatic to seductive to fearful with believable ease. It remains one of the few movies in which the gap is acknowledged and dealt with unbelievably, rather than taken for granted.

Charade is available on Amazon Prime Video.

Dont Go Breaking My Heart

Johnnie To is one of Hong Kong's top professional directors, who excels in hard-boiled triad crime scenes and light-hearted romantic comedy. 2011s Dont Go Breaking My Heart is among the latter categories, with Sean (Louis Koo), a CEO who travels across the street from Chi-yan and infiltrates her with tall corporate glass windows. On the other hand, Kevin (the always-dreamy Daniel Wu) is a genuine, funny person who embraces her for a

Dont Go Breaking My Heart is now available on Netflix.

With his 2020 slasher comedy Freaky, directed by Christopher Landon, the film focuses on a teenage girl (Newton) who accidentally switches her bodies with a middle-aged serial killer (Vaughn) and must find a way to get rid of it. Freaky is committed to a dangerous career, although it is only frightening and hopeful to continue to be a engaging slasher genre with its own realism on the final-girl trope. Toussaint Egan

Freaky is available on HBO Max.

Free Guy

Is Free Guy a superior cinematic art? Yes, it is because outside of it technically being an original film, and it basically boils down to a strange bricolage of The Truman Show by means of Fortnite, PUBG, and GTA Online. Is it a competent video game comedy with impressive performances from Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, and Taika Waititi, who remains more-or-less self-contained to its own community, but? Yes, it's quite engaging to

Free Guy is available on Disney Plus and HBO Max.

The Gold Rush

The Gold Rush is a funny adventure based on the Klondike's remote location, which results in extreme slapstick and farce. Chaplin's Little Tramp, who is blown by Canadian winds and then eats a leather shoe for sustenance, is eventually performed as his legendary fork dance. If you have never seen one of his classics, The Gold Rush is a hilarious entry point. Matt Patches

The Gold Rush is now available on HBO Max and Criterion Channel.

I Married a Witch

during World War II, Rene Clair developed his first name in early French silent and sound cinema. I Married a Witch is a funny romantic comedy directed by Veronica Lake, who hopes to renegrate her in making him fall in love with her.

The Puritans in colonial Salem wreak havoc on Jennifer (Lake) and her father, Daniel, who was detained. He and his descendants, all played by Fredric March, will be mistreated in love, constantly marrying the wrong woman. Wallace Wooley, the latest descendant of the man who led her execution, is also a prominent candidate for governor. He and his marriage to the daughter of his top political supporter, will be held tomorrow.

I Married a Witch is a brilliant 77 minutes of Classic Hollywood delight with costumes by Edith Head. PV

HBO Max and Criterion Channel will stream I Married a Witch.

Last Action Hero

When a movie-obsessed boy (Austin OBrien) is magically transported into the universe of a major action franchise, and the movies villain (Charles Dance) is in turn sent to the real world. Last Action Hero is aided by a director in John McTiernan with real action bona fides (Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, and Predator), a real action star in Schwarzenegger in the lead, and an all-time over-the

The Last Action Hero is now available on Netflix.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Wes Anderson's enchanting 2004 ensemble comedy is homage to Jacques Cousteau and is a heartfelt (and humbling) tribute to the legendary French oceanographer. While he's working on his project, Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) sets out for his next project: to find and kill the shark, and to document the whole thing.

Anjelica Huston (a Zissous estranged wife who finances his projects), Willem Dafoe (an emotionally ill-prepared German first mate), Owen Wilson (a Zissou fan who believes he is Zissous son), and Jeff Goldblum (playing Zissous competitor, a more successful oceanographer) are among the hilarious ensemble casts. PV

With a library card on Hoopla, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is available for free.

Little Monsters

Dave, a foul-mouthed and down-on-his-luck rock musician, will have to accompany Miss Caroline and his nephews on their journey to a petting zoo. Unfortunately for them, the class will be stuck with a zombie outbreak. We will tell you that Josh Gad will be attacked in the process. TE

Little Monsters is available on Hulu.

Love & Friendship

Kate Beckinsale plays Lady Susan in one of her most elegant (and most hilarious) roles in Jane Austens Lady Susan. She works with her throughout the film to the delight of the audience and the frustration of her suitors and friends.

Chloe Sevigny (as Susans supportive best friend) and Tom Bennett (playing a hilariously wealthy fool) and the rest of the cast, as well as Stillman's characteristic biting dialogue and an attention to detail in sets and costs. However, Beckinsales' transcendent performance is complemented by a more recent example of how comedic roles become ignored during the awards season. PV

Prime Video is now available for viewing Love & Friendship.

Multiple Maniacs

Criterion has enlisted the early transgressive adaptations of John Waters as art, and one can only imagine how many times the film was made of that. Multiple Maniacs, the provocateurs second film, is just batshit nutso, constructing a glaring case in which Lady Divine (Waters' go-to collaborator) spirals out of control on a murder spree and her ex-lover (David Lochary) attempts to kill her first with other members of the

Multiple Maniacs are available on HBO Max and Criterion Channel.

The Paper Tigers

Alain Uy, Ron Yuan, and Mykel Shannon Jenkins are among the eponymous Paper Tigers, who have developed into middle-aged nobodies after a lifetime of extensive training and hard fighting. But the three swear an oath to avenge his memory and bring his killer to justice. If it sounds serious, please know this falls into the Apatowian camp of Dumb Man. TE

The Paper Tigers is available on Netflix.

Plus One

The best comes from a more personal, filmmaker-driven place. Plus One, from Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival before quietly ending into a stream, which has been largely overlooked. Maya Erskine (Pen15) and Jack Quaid (The Boys) are among the best actors who have ever seen all their friends stoked and become go-to favorites for the endless nuptials. Formula, in turn, is putting Erskine and Qu

Plus One is now available on Hulu.

This 1985 ramen western is a funny comedy that turns out to be one of the most stunning scenes of food ever shown. When a pair of truck drivers stop at a run-down ramen shop, they befriend the widowed owner and assist her turn the restaurant's fortunes around. Tampopo, a delightful story of community, passion, and human nature, is a cinematic feast. PV

Tampopo is now available on HBO Max and Criterion Channel.

To Be or Not to Be

The 1942 masterpiece, directed by Joanne Gunnor, is a bizarre and touching anti-war tale about a group of actors who use their theatrical skills to slay Nazi soldiers in occupied Warsaw. However, when Germany invades and a Nazi spy schemes to provide a list of secret identities of Resistance fighters to Nazis, the troupe employs every theater trick in the book to outmaneuver the Nazis (including a visiting Hitler himself).

With hilarious repeated gags, disguises galore, and a rock-solid emotional foundation of a group of individuals looking out for each other in the face of evil, To Be or Not to Be is a significant milestone in American cinema's history and one of my personal favorite movies ever made. PV

The HBO Max and Criterion Channel may stream To Be or Not to Be.

The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience

In 2019, The Lonely Island launched this musical film a spoof of Beyonces Lemonade centered on Jose Canseco and Mark McGwires' notorious 1980s home run streak out of nowhere.

The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience, based on their previous projects, like Tour de Pharmacy and 7 Days in Hell (co-starring Kit Harington!) explores Canseco and McGwire's shared psyche through poetry, abstract imagery, and profane lyrics. However, Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer do not skimp on the darkness of the Bash Brothers. As Canseco raps, she writes that his father can save his life. MP

The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience is now available on Netflix.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

Well, we can all agree that musician biopics are a little played out, right? Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is sure to dismiss all of the narrative concepts of the genre, particularly the (often) misguided attempt to take on an entire life in one movie. A box office bomb at the time, Walk Hard has grown into a cult hit, led by an extended sequence where Paul Rudd, Jack Black, Justin Long, and Jason Schwartzman goof off as The Beatles. PV

With ads, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is available for download on Hulu and Peacock.

Wheels on Meals

In the 1980s, little creative teams achieved the same level of success as Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao, which is one of the best of an outrageously good group of films (and my personal favorite). The film focuses on Thomas (Chan) and David (Yuen, a pair of cousins who run a food truck (with skateboarding tricks to boot) and discover themselves enamored with a local woman (Lola Forner). When confronted with

If you like this, check out Project A, which came out a year ago and features one of the most frightening and jaw-dropping actions of Chans' illustrious career. PV
