The Director of Street Fighter 6 discusses World Tour Mode and makes comparisons to Shenmue ...

Street Fighter 6 is expected to perform many of its predecessors, but there have been a lot of fans and critics, with rollback netcode and crossplay introducing features. The brand has also developed a fresh adventure form called World Tour.

In a recent interview with IGN Japan, the game's director revealed that the World Tour mode was meant for inexperienced or casual fighters who wanted to explore the world of the franchise. Nakayama made some comparisons to Shenmue, another game that had a similar open-world exploration with fighting game combat mechanics.

Shenmue had begun out as a Virtua Fighter RPG before becoming its own IP. Even the game had retained the gameplay of Virtual Fighter, so any action that the player would participate would be handled with 3D fighting game mechanics. However, when the interviewer said shenmue was not a direct influence, it was possible that it was still in the minds of the players while they worked on the game.

Nakayama notes how powerful Shenmue was, stating that it had a "significant impact" on him. However, considering the similarities between Shenmue and Street Fighter 6, he jokes that the World Tour mode might have included capsule toys to collect, much like in the previous game. Nakayama said that the interviewer, who was a huge fan of Shenmue, will try it out.

While Street Fighter 6 is poised to be one of the most anticipated fighting games in 2023, the Shenmue series has gone mostly dry aside from an anime adaptation for the game this year. According to creator Yu Suzuki, this model of Shenmue 4 appears to be in the works, but enthusiasts will need to wait to see if these similarities happen.

Street Fighter 6 will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2023.
