Because The Girls Were Weird In It, A League Of Their Own Screenwriter Says Studio Scrapped Prequel ...

Fans of A League of Their Own have a new Amazon Prime Video series to look forward to, but if things had gone quite differently, there might have been a second film as well. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker talked about plans for a prequel that was never implemented. Though it would have focused on Tom Hanks' baseball career.

We actually wanted to do a prequel sequel about Jimmy, Ganz said. It would then be kind of skip over that, and the last act was going to be his career afterward, where he performed a favor for an older Black player who he had met in the prequel part, so he would get him one last shot. This would be a year or two after Jackie Robinson. We couldnt get Columbia to say yes to it.

Ganz believes that the studio was uninterested in developing a follow-up to the womens baseball classic that included women playing baseball.

Columbia wanted us to do another movie about the girls as they said, according to Tom. I was not seeing eye-to-eye with the Columbia people. I guess they wanted Tom and I, and Penny, but they knew they might not write anything. So this thing drew me apart.

The rest of his film is about to emerge in the form of a television reboot. But he doesn't expect Ganz to be watching, although he wishes the series well.

Im not talking from a place of resentment. I doubt that I will watch it because it will feel too strange to me. I cant imagine that I will appreciate the experience, he said. Those are the characters.
