James Gunn is one of the most popular filmmakers working today. With critical films like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, Gunn has quickly won over the hearts of comic book fans everywhere with his unique blend of humor and character-driven storytelling. In recent years, Gunn has spoken open about how he would have envisioned a rated-R Scooby-Doo 3 if he were asked to do it.
Gunn responded to a Twitter user who asked what would have to happen for a third film to be made. The actor who played Mystery Inc. leader Fred was very hesitant, responding, Rightly or wrongly they would make a film. I just don't have the time right now!
Reboots are all the rage these days, whether it's Ghostbusters, Star Wars, or The Munsters. This is why every major franchise under the sun is attempting to recreate the classic Scooby-Doo experience for a new generation. It's a film that was both overlooked by critics at the time, and it's still a clever recreation of the franchise as a whole.
The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker were successful enough to generate an equally enjoyable sequel to Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed in 2004, but that sequel never performed well enough for a third film to be released. Gunn seems to have a fantastic working relationship with WB, so a sequel may be on the way.
Like Gunn mentioned, hes currently working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and various DC projects, including Peacemaker Season 2. Who wouldn't want to see a rated-R Scooby-Doo 3 with Gunn behind the camera? Despite the fact that Michael Keaton is back as Batman, there are still things to consider in a rated-R Scooby-Doo 3.
