Fans were left wondering if their favorite streamer was okay following a cryptic tweet from League of Legends Twitch streamer SipOfCola, who suggested self-harm. Out of concern, curious viewers took matters into their own hands.
SipOfCola, a popular Twitch streamer, declared that he would kill himself. The well-known streamer went on to Twitch shortly thereafter, but was then suspended for violating the terms of service. One viewer on Twitter claimed that he attempted to get banned on purpose.
Concerned viewers took action and alerted the appropriate authorities. Community members on Twitter shared their stories, demonstrating SipOfCola's dedication to the cause.
In many instances, the strength of a streaming community has shined through in the way streamers have shown their support for the streamer. Twitch has been criticized for granting unhealthy behaviors that do not include mental health and self-care, although there is evidence that streamers are able to bypass this restriction by turning their stream off and back on.
"Our Twitch Cares page provides mental health assistance for any member of the community, as well as targeted programming to help Twitch streamers with burnout, boundary-setting, and other stresses that come with working in online content," said a spokesperson for Twitch, which is owned by Amazon. Viewers in the community and patrons who have never seen SipOfCola are relieved that the streamer's mental health appears to be improving, as this event might have been worse in his absence.
