With regard to animated films, the 2022 summer has seen both high and lows. The release of Minions: The Rise of Gru performed better commercially. The next animated film to take a shot at box office fame is D.C. League of Super-Pets, which will premiere this weekend.
The opening weekend for DC League of Super-Pets is expected to be $23 million, with Thursday preview ticket sales totaling $2.2 million. These profits have allowed the animation to take the top spot and lead the domestic charts; Lightyear earned $50.2 million in June, but Universals Minions: The Rise of Gru took the top spot easily.
Animation films have had to go through a rocky time upon their release due to a decrease in viewership of family-friendly films at cinemas. Despite coming in with lower opening day numbers than the previously mentioned animated summer releases, Super-Pets can at least be reassured that it is doing fine for a relatively new entry into the animation comic world. Both movies will also be worth about $23.9 million.
The animated feature features Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, John Krasinski, Keanu Reeves, Diego Luna, and Vanessa Bayer as its super-funny friends of DCs superheroes.
It would be interesting to see how well the feature pulls families to the cinemas, given an A from Cinema Score and a 60% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes.
