Nichelle Nichols' Death: A Remarkable Woman in a Remarkable Role J.J. Abrams, George Takei, and Othe ...

Nichelle Nichols's passing at the age of 89 on Saturday night was a shock to the entire Star Trek fandom. Not only did it lose one of the original cast members, but it lost one of the greatest ambassadors for many of the values it has always embraced: diversity, boundary pushing, space exploration, and kindness.

Nyota Uhura was played by Nichelle Nichols throughout the original Star Trek series three-season broadcast run and in six subsequent films. In 1968, she shared one of the first major interracial kisses with her co-star William Shatner.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who famously dissuaded her from leaving the program, described her as intelligent, quality, beautiful, and capable people who can dance, professors, and lawyers. She emphasized that her role on the show was ultimately necessary because he could replace the character with anyone, even an alien.

Nichols decided to stay on Star Trek, and King was not the only fan who was grateful to see her stay. On Sunday, famous friends and former colleagues came out in droves to pay their condolences and pay tribute to Nichols' incredible life.
