Pokemon UNITE will be released for Nintendo Switch in July 2021 and on mobile devices in September 2021, with both versions being completely free-to-play and featuring full cross-progression.
It follows the trend most MOBA titles follow, being F2P, but moonlighting more as a free-to-start experience that includes content such as playable Pokemon and other content that must be unlocked before becoming useful.
Even game designer TiMi Studio does not require a free-to-start to market the game, as UNITE offers many optional in-game purchases. These include players purchasing Aeos Gems to unlock Gem-only cosmetic items for playable Pokemon called Holowear, avatar cosmetics, and the games premium battle pass, which is the only way to unlock select items included in the battle pass, like Holowear.
Aeos Gems are also useful in allowing you to unlock many other items in the game, including other cosmetics or Pokemon licenses you may use in battle. Regular items can usually be obtained using Aeos Coins or Aeos Tickets, the games free currency you earn when you play the game, though the grind can be severe for frequent players who desire to unlock more than just a few pieces of content.
If you buy Aeos Gems, you cant use them on both systems, unlike most multi-platform games that offer microtransactions. Any premium currency purchased on Switch cannot be used on mobile.
Players may use the same account on different devices, either as a Pokemon Trainer Club account or a Nintendo account, and content purchased with gems will continue.
