Several gaming companies have given fans a number of methods to play retro games in the last few years. One trend that has seen significant success is the release of miniature gaming consoles that have been preloaded with a set of classic games. Sega has released a second one later this year: the Sega Genesis Mini 2.
According to sales data, the 2019 Sega Genesis Mini (or Sega Mega Drive Mini depending on the region) sold over 1.5 million units. Some consoles even had region exclusive games depending on where they were sold. However, this time, the Sega Genesis Mini 2 will feature some old Sega classics as well as some Sega CD games.
Sega had answered a few questions about the upcoming Sega Genesis mini console sequel in a rather uncharacteristic way. A letter from the Japanese office stated that the Sega Genesis Mini 2 was initially developed in small quantities specifically for the West.
The reduction in the number of units is linked to a global semiconductor shortage, which has affected all forms of electronic production, not just video games. The Sega Genesis Mini 2 will cost one-tenth the amount produced for the previous console release, which already makes the console a prime target for scalpers and the like.
The only way to currently buy the Sega mini console is via an Amazon US listing, which states that all orders will be shipped from Japan. The current price is around $106 USD, which is slightly higher than the $80 the 2019 mini console cost at launch. This is a good reason to grab the opportunity.
The Sega Genesis Mini 2 will be released on October 27, 2022.
