The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was praised for its open-world layout. Players loved that the world felt quite large, had many hidden secrets to discover, and forced players to think critically while traversing the world with Link's physics-based Sheikah Rune abilities. The sequel should not simply reimagine the open world from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but rather strive to improve upon it.

Breath of the Wild 2 will have a floating island above Hyrule, possibly inspired by the previous series title The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Link will also gain new powers, presumably utilizing his Sheikah Slate, as he was shown emerging from the ground via a strange portal while exploring the floating islands. However, there are other ways in which the game might expand on the open world concept to enhance players' enjoyment.

Include Even More Travel Options

In Breath of the Wild, Link can use his paraglider to fly through Hyrule's skies. Some Zelda enthusiasts criticized its controls. Other Zelda enthusiasts could try horse riding, shield surfing, and riding on sand seals in the Gerudo Desert. Some creative players even used Link's magnetism and cryokinesis abilities to make a mine cart "fly" or cross large bodies of water by stepping on blocks of ice.

Adding additional transportation modes to Breath of the Wild 2 should not feel repetitive, as the previous trailers suggest. A modified version of the classic Hookshot might be added to it to allow Link to grasp distant locations and fly through the air to reach them.

Add True Dungeons To Explore

Breath of the Wild received one criticism for its lack of dungeons, something that had been present in many previous The Legend of Zelda games. The game's main dungeons were the four Divine Beasts, which were fairly small and generally took no longer than a minute to complete. They could also be a bit tricky, with players having to constantly change the positioning of the Beast to access different sections of the interior.

The addition of dungeons to Breath of the Wild 2, whether or not they are needed for story progression, would be a significant improvement. A system of caves beneath Hyrule might also be useful as dungeons in previous titles like Ocarina of Time.

Use the World to Show Off Hyrule's Progress

The Hyrule of Breath of the Wild was a world that was just beginning to recover from Calamity Ganon's destructive reign. Most of the world was wilderness, many buildings and towns were destroyed, and only a few inhabited settlements remained. Zora's Domain, Gerudo Town, Lurelin Village, and the few other lived-in towns were scattered across the world, forcing Link to travel long distances to find an item shop or a bed to sleep in. Many fans anticipate that Breath of the Wild will expand its open world map as the land recovers following Ganon's defeat. Existing towns may become larger and more amenities may be provided to players, while new towns may be constructed or previously ruined areas may be being rebuilt.

Don't Just Reuse The Same Map

Parts of Breath of the Wild's huge open world map will likely be reused for the sequel. Trailers have shown Hyrule Castle and the surrounding area, as well as wide shots of Hyrule's mountain ranges in the distance. Reusing the map in its entirety is a development error that the game's creators are most likely to avoid.

There are plenty of possibilities for extending the map. As previously mentioned, the floating isles and a possible cavern system beneath Hyrule might extend the existing world.
