Billy Wilders' 1960 romantic comedy is often regarded as one of the finest films ever produced. That reputation is well-deserved.
Bud Baxter (Jack Lemmon), a solitary office worker who lets employees at his company use his apartment for their extramarital affairs. He believes this will help him rise in the large insurance company he works for. As a result, his superiors take more and more advantage of his time and space, leaving Bud unable to sleep in his own bed or access his own home.
When Bud discovers that his boss has an affair in The Apartment (Shirley MacLaine), things become more complicated.
Wilder, a heartfelt and funny romantic comedy, cleverly balances the tension between corporate pressure and newfound love with the cast's unsurpassed comedy ability. The Apartment is one of those films everyone should see at least once.
With a library card on Kanopy, the Apartment is available for free streaming.
Michael Jai White is one of the great underappreciated actors of our time, and his Black Dynamite comedy is one of the greatest laugh-out stories of the century. White stars in the film as Black Dynamite, a former CIA agent who strives for vengeance for his brothers' deaths leads him all the way to the Nixon White House. The script is filled with silly gags and cultural commentary.
Black Dynamite is now available for HBO Max subscribers.
Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, and Mary Steenburgen star as a group of best friends who have been a part of a long-standing book club. Each of them, though successful in their careers, are facing life or love difficulties. When one of them chooses Fifty Shades of Grey as their next book, it opens the group up in a lovely tale of personal acceptance and self-realization, no matter where you are in life.
On Paramount Plus, Book Club is available to stream.
Reggie (Audrey Hepburn) has been living off of her husband's murder, and she forgets where she got it, unlike the other guys in her life, Peter Joshua (Cary Grant). To make matters worse, the remaining money is missing, and a lot of terrible people think Reggie knows where it is.
In Charade, Hepburn and Grant, two well-known and charming actors, can go from pragmatic to fearful with believable ease; it remains one of the few films in which the age gap is acknowledged and addressed honestly, rather than taken for granted. Its His Girl Friday by way of Hitchcock. Jenna Stoeber
Charade is available for free on Prime Video and the Criterion Channel, as well as for free with a library card on Hoopla or Kanopy, or for free with advertisements on Vudu, The Roku Channel, Freevee, and Pluto TV.
Dont Go Breaking My Heart
Dont Go Breaking My Heart is a classic Hong Kong crime drama that excels in hard-boiled triad crime dramas and lighthearted romantic comedy. On the other hand, there's Kevin (the always-dreamy Daniel Wu), an alcoholic former architect who assists Chi-yan in moving on. What follows is a sincere, funny, and truly enthralling romantic time.
Dont Go Breaking My Heart is available on Netflix.
With his 2020 slasher comedy Freaky starring Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton, the director of Happy Death Day is committed to a slapstick uprising of genre conventions, with a concluding act that is both funny and gory enough to still be a fun slasher film with its own satisfying twist on the final-girl trope.
On HBO Max, Freaky is available to stream.
Free Guy is a masterful cinematic art work. Outside of being an original film, its premise basically boils down to a strange bricolage of The Truman Show by way of Fortnite, PUBG, and GTA Online. Is it a competent video game comedy with solid performances by Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, and Taika Waititi that ends in an explosion of indulgent Easter egg fan service? No. It's an excellent video game comedy that's above the rest of the
Free Guy is available to watch on Disney Plus and HBO Max.
The Gold Rush
Charlie Chaplin's adventurous comedy is over 100 years old, and it absolutely still holds up for the current sense of humor. In The Gold Rush, Chaplin's Little Tramp is a prospector living on a shack in the middle of the Klondike. Extreme slapstick and farce ensue, as Little Tramps is blown by Canadian winds, stoops to eating a leather shoe for sustenance, and finally performs his legendary fork dance.
The Gold Rush is available to stream on HBO Max and Criterion Channel or for free with ads on Freevee.
I Married a Witch
Rene Clair, an early French silent and sound cinematographer, spent a few years filming in the United States during World War II. Among them is the excellent black-and-white romantic comedy I Married a Witch, which stars Veronica Lake as a witch who wants revenge on the descendant of the man who imprisoned her by causing him to fall in love with her.
Jennifer (Lake) and her father, Daniel (Cecil Kellaway), are cursed by Puritans in colonial Salem. He and his descendants will be doomed to be miserable in love, always marrying the wrong lady. She awake 270 years later, and she begins pursuing her target: Wallace Wooley, the latest descendant of the man who caused her execution and a leading candidate for governor.
I Married a Witch is a 77-minute classic Hollywood delight with costumes by Edith Head, charming practical effects (the two witches are represented by wisps of smoke before inhabiting bodies), and a slew of funny gags (there's a popped maize vendor during the intermission of the witches' execution). PV
I Married a Witch is available for streaming on HBO Max and Criterion Channel.
Last Action Hero
The boy and the films hero (Arnold Schwarzenegger) must join forces to defy the movie-obsessed boy (Austin OBrien) who is magically transported into the real world of a major action franchise. The film's director is assisted by John McTiernan, who has real action bona fides in the leads (Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, and Predator), and an all-time over-the-top villain performance from Dance.
Netflix has a subscription to The Last Action Hero.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Wes Anderson's 2004 ensemble comedy is dedicated to Jacques Cousteau and is a loving (and funny) tribute to the legendary French oceanographer. Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) is an oceanographer/documentary who lost his best friend to a shark attack while working on his next project: to discover and kill the shark and film the whole thing.
The Life Aquatic is a cinematic feast of the senses with Anjelica Huston (Zissous' exiled wife who finances his projects), Willem Dafoe (an emotionally insecure German first mate), Owen Wilson (a Zissou super-fan who believes he is his Zissous son), and Jeff Goldblum (playing a more successful Zissous opponent).
Steve Zissou's Life Aquatic is available for free on Hoopla or for free with ads on Tubi.
The director of Little Monsters, Alexander England, plays Dave, a foul-mouthed and down-on-his-luck rock musician who lives with his sister and nephew after a rough breakup. Unfortunately, the petting zoo is located adjacent to a US Army facility that is experiencing a zombie outbreak.
Little Monsters is now available to stream on Hulu.
Love & Friendship
Kate Beckinsale plays Lady Susan, a young widow who wants suitable matches for her daughter (Morfydd Clark) and herself. She flirts and schemes her way throughout the film to the delight of the audience and her jealous friends.
Chloe Sevigny (as Susans supportive best friend), Tom Bennett (as a funnyly dense wealthy gentleman) and the rest of the cast make remarkable supporting contributions, as well as Stillmans unique biting dialogue and attention to detail in sets and costuming. One of the more recent examples of how comedic roles get ignored during awards season
On Prime Video, Love & Friendship is available to stream.
Criterion has ordained the early transgressive comedies of John Waters into art, and one can only imagine what Waters circa 1970 would make of that. Multiple Maniacs, the provocateurs' second film, is a batshit nutso, constructing a flimsy scenario in which Lady Divine (Waters' go-to collaborator) spirals out of control on a murder spree and her ex-lover (David Lochary) plots to kill her first with
HBO Max and Criterion Channel has several Maniacs to watch.
My Cousin Vinny
Two New Yorkers were wrongly arrested for murder in Alabama, one of them calling his cousin (Joe Pesci), who has finally passed the bar exam after many, many attempts. That cousin, Vinny, and his fiancee Mona Lisa Vito (Marisa Tomei), go to the Deep South to attempt to win a trial with the odds against them.
My Cousin Vinny, a culture-clash comedy mixed with a legal drama, is so successful because to its central performances. Pesci is fantastic as Vinny, at times overconfident, at times without confidence at all, but at all times caring deeply for his loved ones. Tomei, in particular, is the star of the show, who deserves an Oscar for this incredible role.
My Cousin Vinny is available for download on HBO Max or for free with a library card on Hoopla.
The Paper Tigers
Alain Uy, Ron Yuan (Mulan) and Mykel Shannon Jenkins play the eponymous Paper Tigers, three former martial arts prodigies who have grown into beleaguered middle-aged nobodies following a lifetime of intense training and hard fighting. However, when their master is murdered, the three swear an oath to bring him to justice.
The Paper Tigers is available for free on Netflix and Hi-Yah! or for free with a library card on Hoopla and Kanopy.
The best of Pen15's romantic comedy has sat in a more personal, filmmaker-driven position, before slowly settling into a streaming position. Formula works to the movies advantage, finding sweet humor in modern situations and wringing Erskine and Quaid for every drop of charisma they have to offer.
Plus One is available to stream on Hulu or for free with a library card on Hoopla.
Singin in the Rain
What can we say about one of the most popular movies of all time? Ill tell you this: If Singin in the Rain wasnt on this list, we wouldn't be doing our jobs correctly.
The timeless 1952 classic by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly is as sociable and funny as you can get. Although it's not exactly unusual, the 13-minute dream sequence Broadway Melody is absolutely enthralling.
On HBO Max, Singin in the Rain is available for streaming.
Tampopo is a film about friendship, passion, and human nature that is filtered through the appreciation of good food.
Tampopo is available to watch on HBO Max and Criterion Channel.
To Be or Not to Be
Ernst Lubitsch's 1942 masterpiece is an uproarious and moving anti-war story about a group of actors who plot to defraud Nazi soldiers in occupied Warsaw. But when Germany invades and a Nazi spy plots to expose the Resistance fighters, the group employs every theater trick in the book to outmaneuver the Nazis (including a visiting Hitler himself).
To Be or Not to Be is a historical film with funny repeated gags, fantastic disguises, and a rock-solid emotional foundation of a group of people striving to protect each other in the face of evil. One of my personal favorites ever is
On HBO Max and Criterion Channel, To Be or Not to Be is available for viewing.
The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience
This musical film, a spoof of Beyonce's Lemonade, focused on Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire's famous home run streak from the 1980s, deserves more praise.
The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience, inspired by their previous projects, is a collection of poetry, abstract imagery, and profane lyrics that explore Canseco and McGwire's shared psyche. Alana Haim, Maya Rudolph, Jenny Slate, Jim OHeir, and Sterling K. Brown as Sia all appear in the Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience.
The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience is now available on Netflix.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is a great example of this. Reilly's charming lead performance as Dewey Cox, a hilarious supporting role by Tim Meadows as Deweys drummer, and a constant flow of funny music gags as funny as they are funny (highlighted by an extended sequence where Paul Rudd, Jack Black, Justin Long, and Jason Schwartzman joke off as The Beatles)
The Dewey Cox Story is available for viewing on Paramount Plus.
Wheels on Meals
Wheels on Meals is one of the best of an outrageously good group of movies shot and shot in Barcelona. When Thomas (Chan) and David (Yuen) meet a somewhat incompetent private investigator (Sammo Hung), the group band together to rescue her when she is kidnapped.
Jackie Chan's prolific filmography is shown in Wheels on Meals, where he squares off against legendary kickboxer Benny Urquidez (the two would later fight again in Dragons Forever), who at the time was among the most prominent and successful fighters in the world. There are few things more beneficial in this world.
If you like this, you should also check out Project A, which came out a year before and features one of Chans' most daring and jaw-dropping stunts.
With Plex's advertisements, Wheels on Meals is available to stream for free.
