August is here, can you believe it? These are just a few of the many new movies to be streamed this month, including popular favorites like Sam Raimis' Spider-Man trilogy Ex Machina, Alex Garlands' cerebral sci-fi debut, Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog, and more.
Here are 15 of the greatest movies to be released on streaming services in August 2022.
Belle is told the tale of Suzu, a shy high school student who seeks a fresh start after her mother's death. Just as her online personality Belle begins to gain notoriety as a digital pop idol, Suzu meets the Dragon, a monstrous figure known for his ability to wreak havoc.
This gripping work that combines the distinctive characters and emotional story beats of filmmaker Mamoru Hosodas' previous work and places them in a captivating new world created by a broad spectrum of talented artists across the world, is Hosodas' most popular film to date.
Belle is now available for HBO Max subscribers to stream.
This pre-DC Universe DC film is a supernatural neo-noir, with pre-John Wick Keanu Reeves as a very nasty John Constantine. Made very much in the style of an old detective thriller (but with supernatural elements), Constantine is a campy fun time with a great cast (Reeves is joined by Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton, and Peter Stormare, among others) and more than a few silly visual gags.
Constantine is now available for Netflix streaming.
Caleb, a young programmer who accepts a week with Nathan, an elusive tech CEO, at his luxurious and isolated house, is a remarkable sci-fi thriller that ranks among the top 10 films of the decade. Toussaint Egan is a well-known author.
Ex Machina is now available for viewing on HBO Max.
John Woos third Hollywood film (following Hard Target and Broken Arrow) is the first where he has really developed the stamina that make a John Woo film a John Woo film. Face/Off is a delightfully over-the-top 90s action movie that thrives on Woos' direction and the two leading performances.
Sean Archer, an FBI agent, was murdered by Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage), a terrorist who intended to kill the older Archer. In his quest for vengeance, Archer undergoes an experimental face transplant surgery, becoming Troy. Of course, Troy does the same in return, becoming Archer.
When it came to the script, Mike Werb and Michael Colleary considered Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's obvious, but im glad we got this one.
Face/Off is now available for streaming on Paramount Plus and Prime Video.
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai
Ghost Dog is a modern-day samurai who lives by the code in Hagakure (also known as The Book of the Samurai) but is also mysterious to those he interacts with. When Ghost Dog is hired to kill a gangster but leaves an innocent bystander alive, a hit is thrown out on his life.
Whitaker is fantastic in his lead role, and Jarmusch's script and direction are perfect. But Ghost Dog is fantastic because of the soundtrack, the first film soundtrack produced by the RZA. PV
HBO Max has available for stream Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai.
Locke is a contained thriller set entirely in a car. He follows construction worker Ivan Locke (Tom Hardy) as he drives from Birmingham to London the night before a big project. He learns that the woman he is having an affair with is about to have a child. As he travels across the country to join her, he manages to keep conversations on the phone with business associates and family members.
Locke is now available on HBO Max for streaming.
Man on Fire
Man on Fire, a 2004 film starring Denzel Washington as a former CIA agent turned bodyguard for a 9-year-old girl in Mexico City, was a showcase for Tony Scott, who is at his finest, delivering a brutal, explosive, and eerie action thriller about a man's quest for redemption and his surrogate love for his charge.
Peacock has access to Man on Fire.
Jet Li plays many, many versions of himself before the multiverse's seemingly endless assault of multiverse movies. A film about interdimensional travel, the narrative follows a homicidal serial killer who is traveling across the multiverse to murder all other versions of himself, as well as a group of people who are attempting to keep him from accomplishing his goal.
Back to all of the Jet Lis. First you have our main characters protagonist Gabe Law, a police officer, and antagonist Gabriel Yulaw, the previously mentioned homicidal serial killer. There are also Yu Fook Law (Rastafari Jet Li), Swen Law (surfer Jet Li), Seth Law (Jet Li with long hair), and so, so many more.
The One is a popular game due to its fun setup, but also because of Lis' specific set of skills. Lis personal action director Corey Yuen (Yes, Madam) displays his acrobatic ability with a dynamic energy, especially in the moments where Li kicks people in midair like soccer balls. Also, Delroy Lindo and Jason Statham (with an American accent and a mostly full head of hair!)
The One is available for HBO Max subscribers.
Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) is the best person in the long-running Predator series, taking the sci-fi villain and putting him in the 18th-century America. Naru (Amber Midthunder) is the only one who notices this imminent danger.
Our verdict is this:
Prey is a film about a young woman who is on a collision course with a cool skull-dismembering alien dude. The other members of the Narus tribe are there to naysay and/or become Predator fodder, and a late-arriving band of fur traders offers up some huntable bodies. Sometimes, Trachtenberg gives the camera just enough space for a great view of obstacles such as a particularly sticky mud pit.
Prey is now available for streaming on Hulu.
Sam Raimis Spider-Man Trilogy
Three of the finest Marvel films ever released have already arrived on Netflix and Hulu. Yes, I said three.
Weve talked quite a bit at Polygon about our admiration for Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man trilogy. With a great cast with terrific villainous performances, and a strong moral center, its hard to beat.
I'll happily join the masses in lauding the first two films, both of which are excellent, but I'd like to take a moment to praise the third one. It's messy, yes, but in a really fascinating way (if you can get past the third act or all of the Topher Grace as Venom stuff). In Spider-Man 3, the first two films leave Peter as an inadequate Spidey and, most importantly, a very demonic boyfriend to Mary-Jane. Much of this movie is
The Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy is now available on Netflix and Hulu.
Michael Mann's 1981 neo-noir heist thriller Thief stars James Caan (The Godfather), an ex-con and professional safecracker who wishes to go straight and raise a family. Unfortunately for him, Frank is denied his share of his latest heist, forcing him to accept an assignment from the Mob in order to make ends meet.
Thief is now available for streaming on Prime Video.
Uncut Gems is a stunning piece of literature. Not only is it one of the finest thrillers you can watch at home, but it is also one of the finest basketball films. Here, Adam Sandler's career-best performance is turned into a literal life-and-death situation.
On Peacock, Uncut Gems is available for streaming.
Under the Skin
Under the Skin is a stone-cold thriller from Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast) that is beautifully paced and slow-burning.
From our list of the finest films of the 2010s:
Under the Skin, Jonathan Glazer's existential science fiction horror film about an alien who harvests men for purposes that are opaque and painful, is dark and dark, and is dark and tragic in its entirety. (Oh, and a shout-out to Micah Levis' piercing, icy score.)
Under the Skin is now available on HBO Max.
