Everything we know so far about Pokemon Scarlet and Violet ...

Scarlet and Violet, Pokemon, will be released on Nintendo Switch on November 18th. Ahead of that release date, The Pokemon Company is slowly releasing new information on the ninth-generation Pokemon games, the next in line for the 26-year-old franchise. The first trailer was released on YouTube in June, before another look at Scarlet and Violet was released Wednesday.

Theres still a lot to learn about the next mainline Pokemon in the franchise, including some brand-new Pokemon and what to expect from the open-world gameplay.

Here's what The Pokemon Company has shown so far regarding Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Please keep updating this page whenever new information comes out.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet release date

The Pokemon Company announced that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet would be released on November 18th. The games will be available exclusively on Nintendo Switch.

Region name: Paldea

Paldea, a new area named Pokemon Scarlet and Violets, was announced in August by The Pokemon Company. Its a land of vast open spaces dotted with lakes, towering peaks, wastelands, and mountain ranges.

If you're playing Scarlet or Violet, you'll go to one of two schools: Naranja Academy or Uva Academy.

Open-world RPG gameplay for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are described as an open-world experience, meaning that players will be able to roam freely between wilderness and towns in a manner that is different from previous Pokemon games, with, perhaps, more influence from Pokemon Sword and Shields Wild Area and Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

On the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet website, the Pokemon Company promises that the world will be free to explore at your leisure rather than in an order dictated by the story. It's still a journey for Pokemon trainers to embark on, but its one that sounds more varied than in the past: Meet a wide variety of people and Pokemon, and explore the world of Pokemon the way you want to.

After enrolling in one of the two academies in August, The Pokemon Company explained how players may weave a story however they want. The Treasure Hunt is how players may access the three grand stories in Scarlet and Violet, according to the Pokemon Company.

The multiplayer experience of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Players may expect multiplayer gameplay with up to four players, although trading and battling are part of the experience, but the biggest change is exploration: You will be able to explore the different locations of the region in these games with other players, according to the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet website.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will have local wireless play for two to four players, while online multiplayer will be available for one to four players through a feature called the Union Circle, where players can meet up and explore together in the same room.

Although it is unclear how extensive the multiplayer experience will be, it's clear that The Pokemon Company has been leading into a more extensive multiplayer experience following Pokemon Sword and Shield.

As The Pokemon Company pointed out in August, there is also trading and battling. There are also trades with friends and surprise trades, as well as battle functionality available on the Poke Portal.

Scarlet and Violet starter Pokemon

Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly are three starter Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violets, who can be used to make things at their own pace and spit out flames; and Quaxly, an earnest and tidy Duckling Pokemon who enjoys keeping its hair clean.

To be honest, we do not know what these three initial concepts will be.

New Professors and adversaries for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

According to The Pokemon Company, players will get a different professor for the first time, while Pokemon Violet players will get Professor Turo. Both names are references to past and future, too, and explain their outfits.

It's unclear how or whether the professor choice will affect gameplay.

Nemona isn't explicitly labeled as a competitor for the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet pack; instead, The Pokemon Company refers to her as a friend and trustworthy guide who appears to serve the same purpose as the competitor.

Clavell, the academy director, and Mr. Jacq, the biology and homeroom teachers are also on the list.

Other new Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet

Pawmi, Lechonk, and Smoliv, three new Pokemon from Pokemon Scarlet and Violets, were introduced in June. Smoliv is a perfect, normal-type hog Pokemon that loves berries, and Fidough, a muscular Pokemon that's suited for colder seasons.

Paldean Wooper, a new form of Wooper found only in Paldea, was also shown in the August teaser.

Koraidon and Miraidon

The Pokemon Company released two new forms for the new Legendary Pokemon Koraidon and Miraidon. Pokemon Scarlet has the scarlet-hued Koraidon, while Pokemon Violet has the purple Miraidon, both from the Pokemon Collection.

The Pokemon Company revealed that these two Pokemon are a core component of Scarlet and Violet, and that they can be used as motorbikes that work on land, sea, and in the sky. Here's how the three modes work, straight from The Pokemon Company:

  • Sprinting Build / Drive Mode: Players can ride Sprinting Build Koraidon or Drive Mode Miraidon, making it easier to traverse the expansive Paldea region more freely.
  • Swimming Build / Aquatic Mode: Players will be able to jump into rivers, lakes and vibrant oceans to approach the Pokemon that live there or cross perilous waters in a snap by riding Swimming Build Koraidon or Aquatic Mode Miraidon.
  • Gliding Build / Glide Mode: Players can jump from mountains, towering cliffs or tall buildings and glide toward their destination.

Terastal Pokemon and Tera Raid Battles

The Terastal Phenomenon appears to be akin to Gigantamax Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Instead of getting huge, Pokemon in the Paldea region turn into gemstones with jewel crowns that can change their types to boost their battle strategies, according to The Pokemon Company.

According to the company, there are 18 Pokemon Tera Types in total.

Tera Raid Battles, the second part of the Terastal Phenomenon, appear to be similar to Max Raid Battles. Players may compete against wild Terastal Pokemon with friends or alone.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet pre-order details

The Pokemon Company is offering a special Pikachu as a preorder bonus, as well as an Adventure Set for digital purchasers that includes potions, heals, and other in-game items.

The game also has a double pack, which includes both versions of the game. Players who purchase this will receive two codes one per game and 100 Poke Balls for each code. The double pack costs $120.
