The Apartment

The 1960 Billy Wilders comedy is often dubbed one of the finest films ever made. That reputation is well-deserved.

Bud Baxter (Jack Lemmon) is a solitary office worker who allows his colleagues to use his house for extramarital affairs. He believes this will help him advance in the huge insurance company he works for. However, his superiors take more and more advantage of his time and space, leaving Bud unable to sleep in his own bed or access his own home.

Bud's desire to forge an affair with her gives him the confidence to regain control of his life. However, when Bud discovers she has an affair with his boss (Fred MacMurray), things become even more complicated.

Wilder, in a heartfelt and hilarious romantic comedy, cleverly balances the tension between corporate fatigue and newfound love with the cast's exceptional comedic ability. The Apartment is one of those films that everyone should see at least once.

With a library card on Kanopy, the Apartment is available to stream for free.

Black Dynamite

Michael Jai White is one of the most underappreciated actors of our time, and his blaxploitation parody Black Dynamite is one of the funniest movies of the century. White stars as Black Dynamite, a former CIA agent who is now on his way to the Nixon White House. The film's funny, biting narrative is also accompanied by silly gags and cultural commentary.

Black Dynamite is now available on HBO Max for streaming.

Book Club

Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen form a group of best friends who have been a member of a long-standing book club. Each of them, though successful in their careers, is dealing with life or love difficulties. When one of them chooses Fifty Shades of Grey as their next book, it opens the group up in a wonderful story of personal acceptance and self-realization, no matter what stage in your life you are in.

On Paramount Plus, Book Club is now available for streaming.

Reggie (Audrey Hepburn) has been living off the profits from her husband's crime until she realizes she didn't know anything about him or, for that matter, the new guy in her life, Peter Joshua (Cary Grant). To make matters worse, the remaining money is missing, and Reggie believes she knows where it is.

In Charade, Hepburn and Grant, both well-known and charming actors, can go from pragmatic to enthralling to fearful with believable ease; it remains one of the few films in which the age difference is acknowledged and addressed honestly, rather than taken for granted. Its His Girl Friday by Hitchcock. Jenna Stoeber

Charade is available to stream on Prime Video and the Criterion Channel for free with a library card on Hoopla or Kanopy, or for free with ads on Vudu, The Roku Channel, Freevee, and Pluto TV.

Dont Go Breaking My Heart

Dont Go Breaking My Heart is one of Hong Kong's most popular romantic dramas, and it's one of the many accolades that she has received during her long-term career. On the one hand, there's Sean (Louis Koo), a former architect who helps Chi-yan continue to develop and is inspired by her to continue creating.

Dont Go Breaking My Heart is available for viewing on Netflix.

With his 2020 slasher comedy Freaky starring Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton, who accidentally switches bodies with a middle-aged serial killer (Vaughn), the film is fun and gory enough to keep it from being a satirical end-girl trope.

On HBO Max, Freaky is now available for streaming.

Free Guy

Is Free Guy a masterful cinematic art? Absolutely not. Its premise essentially consists of a weird bricolage of The Truman Show via Fortnite, PUBG, and GTA Online, but it is a solid video game comedy that remains more or less self-contained to its own universe before climaxing in an explosion of indulgent Easter egg fan service.

Free Guy is now available on Disney Plus and HBO Max.

The Gold Rush

The Gold Rush is a nearly 100-year-old comedy that holds up to modern humor. Little Tramps is a prospector who is blown by Canadian winds, stoops to eating a leather shoe for sustenance, and finally performs his famous fork dance.

The Gold Rush is available for free on HBO Max and Criterion Channel or as an advertisement on Freevee.

I Married a Witch

Rene Clair, who made his name in early French silent and sound cinema, spent a few years producing films in the United States during World War II. Among them is the spectacular black-and-white romantic comedy I Married a Witch, which stars the incomparable Veronica Lake as a witch who wants revenge on the descendant of the man who imprisoned her by wooing him with her.

Jennifer (Lake) and her father, Daniel (Cecil Kellaway), are cursed by Puritans in colonial Salem, for the man who caused her death, and they will be doomed to be unhappy in love, always marrying the wrong woman. 270 years later, she begins pursuing her target: Wallace Wooley, the latest descendant of her original convict and prominent political supporter.

I Married a Witch is a breezy 77 minutes of Classic Hollywood delight with stunning costumes by Edith Head, funny practical effects (the two witches are represented by tiny smoke clouds before inhabiting bodies), and a few funny gags (there's a popped maize vendor during the intermission of the witches' execution). PV

I Married a Witch is available for streaming on HBO Max and Criterion Channel.

Last Action Hero

The boy and the films hero (Arnold Schwarzenegger) must unite to stop him when he is magically transported into the actual world of a major action franchise. The film's film is aided by having a filmmaker in John McTiernan with real action bona fides (Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, and Predator), an all-time over-the-top villain performance from Dance.

The Last Action Hero is now available on Netflix.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Wes Anderson's strange 2004 ensemble comedy is dedicated to Jacques Cousteau and is a loving (and funny) tribute to the legendary French oceanographer. Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) is an oceanographer/documentarian who loses his best friend to a shark attack while working on his project. Zissou sets out for his next project: to find and kill the shark, and film the whole thing.

Anjelica Huston (Zissous' estranged wife who finances his projects), Owen Wilson (a Zissou super-fan who believes he is his Zissous son), and Jeff Goldblum (playing a Zissous opponent who more successful oceanographer) make The Life Aquatic a cinematic feast of the senses. PV

Steve Zissou's Life Aquatic is available for free on Hoopla or for free with ads on Tubi.

Little Monsters

Becky Forsythes' 2019 horror comedy Little Monsters stars Alexander England (Alien: Covenant) as Dave, a foul-mouthed and down-on-his-luck rock musician who lives with his nephews' kindergarten teacher. Unfortunately, the petting zoo is located close to a zombie outbreak.

Little Monsters is now available for streaming on Hulu.

Love & Friendship

Kate Beckinsale plays Lady Susan, a young widow who is attempting to find suitable partners for her daughter (Morfydd Clark) and herself. Susan flirts and schemes her way throughout the film, much to the audience's chagrin and to the chagrin of her suitors and pals.

Chloe Sevigny (playing Susan's loving best friend), Tom Bennett (playing a hilariously ruthless wealthy idiot) and the rest of the cast make a terrific supporting role, as well as Stillmans' characteristic biting dialogue and attention to detail in sets and costuming. PV

Love & Friendship is now available for download on Prime Video.

Multiple Maniacs

Criterion has anointed John Waters' early transgressive comedies as art, and one can only imagine what Waters' 1970 performance might be like. In true Waters fashion, the plot is a means for bodily fluid expulsion, extravagant performance, and a moment of backdoor penetration courtesy of a sacred religious object.

Multiple Maniacs are available to watch on HBO Max and Criterion Channel.

My Cousin Vinny

One of the two New Yorkers, Ralph Macchio, is wrongly accused in Alabama of murder, calling his cousin (Joe Pesci), who has successfully passed the bar exam after many, many attempts. Vinny and his wife Mona Lisa Vito (Marisa Tomei) travel to the Deep South to attempt to win a trial against them.

My Cousin Vinny, a cultural crossover comedy that combines legal and culture conflict, is so successful due to its central performances. Pesci is fantastic as Vinny, at times overconfident, at times without confidence at all, but at all times caring deeply for his loved ones. But Tomei, who deserves an Oscar nomination for this amazing role, is an extremely sharp and hilarious performance.

My Cousin Vinny is available for free streaming on HBO Max or for free with a library card on Hoopla.

The Paper Tigers

Alain Uy, Ron Yuan, and Mykel Shannon Jenkins play the eponymous Paper Tigers, three former martial arts prodigies who have grown into ruthless middle-aged nobodies after a lifetime of hard training and hard fighting. However, when their master is murdered, the three swear an oath to confess and bring his killer to justice.

The Paper Tigers is available for free streaming on Netflix and Hi-Yah! or for free with a library card on Hoopla and Kanopy.

Plus One

Plus One, by Pen15 writers Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival before quietly settling into a streaming space and is largely overlooked. Erskine and Quaid (The Boys) star as best buds who have gotten engaged in endless marathons of nuptials.

Plus One is available for free streaming on Hulu or for free with a library card on Hoopla.

Singin in the Rain

What can we say about one of the most well-known movies of all time? Ill tell you this: If Singin in the Rain wasnt on this list, we wouldnt be doing our jobs correctly.

Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly's timeless 1952 classic is as joyous and funny as you remember. The 13-minute dream sequence Broadway Melody is enthralling. PV

Singin in the Rain is now available on HBO Max.

Tampopo is a hilarious 1985 ramen western that is also one of the most beautiful food depictions ever shown on screen. A story of friendship, passion, and human nature all filtered through the appreciation of good food, it is a cinematic feast. PV

Tampopo is now available for streaming on HBO Max and Criterion Channel.

To Be or Not to Be

Ernst Lubitsch's 1942 masterpiece is an uproarious and moving anti-war story about a group of actors who dupe Nazi soldiers in occupied Warsaw. But when Germany invades and a Nazi spy plots to expose them, the group employs every theater tactic available to aid the Nazis (including a visiting Hitler himself).

To Be or Not to Be is a historic American film with funny repeated gags, bizarre disguises, and a rock-solid emotional foundation of a group of people who strive to protect one another in the face of evil. One of my personal favorite movies ever

On HBO Max and Criterion Channel, To Be or Not to Be is available for streaming.

The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience

This musical film is a spoof of Beyonces Lemonade focused on Jose Canseco and Mark McGwires notorious 1980s home run streak out of nowhere in 2019. It deserves more love.

The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience, which includes poetry, abstract imagery, and profane lyrics, features Alana Haim, Maya Rudolph, Jenny Slate, Jim OHeir, and Sterling K. Brown as Sia. Despite their apparent lack of substance, Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer have stayed true to their original songs.

The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience is now available on Netflix.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

We can all agree that musician biopics are a bit played out, right? This humorous music biopic skewers all genre conventions, including the often jarring attempts to record a whole life in one film. Walk Hard has developed into a cult classic over time, accompanied by a hilarious supporting cast of Tim Meadows as Dewey Cox (highlighted by an extended sequence where Jack Black, Justin Long, and Jason Schwartzman play The Beatles).

The Dewey Cox Story is now available on Paramount Plus.

Wheels on Meals

Wheels on Meals is one of the finest of an outrageously good group of films (and my personal favorite) set in Barcelona. When Thomas (Chan) and David (Yuen) discovers a somewhat unlucky private investigator (Sammo Hung) who is also looking for the woman, the group band together to save her.

Wheels on Meals has some of Jackie Chan's finest fight scenes from his prolific filmography, as he squares off against legendary kickboxer Benny Urquidez (the pair would later fight again in Dragons Forever), who at the time was one of the most well-known and successful fighters in the world. There are few things better in this world.

If you like this, you should also check out Project A, which was released a year earlier and features one of Chans' most spectacular and terrifying stunts.

With Plex advertisements, Wheels on Meals is available to stream for free.
