Everyone knows that MMOs are huge business, but Square Enix, one of the world's most famous game designers, is one of the few shining stars in a poor quarter. That includes Final Fantasy XIV, which has risen year on year.
Only MMOs increased year on year in each of the company's three main Digital Entertainment categories since the last quarter. HD Games (mainly casual and mobile games) remained unchanged from previous years, despite the release of several new titles.
Only in the MMO category was the news good. Final Fantasy XIV's paying subscriber figures increased year over year, whereas the rest of the financial reports showed that sales and operating earnings for the past quarter have decreased.
Final Fantasy XIV's strong performance compared to last year has several reasons. For one, FFXIV was in the second year of an expansion during the same quarter this year, and FFXIV had only released Endwalker a few months earlier.
However, keeping that momentum going will be the toughest part. Final Fantasy, like any MMO, has a tendency to lose players as the expansion progresses, but fans like it especially when it comes to narrative content.
Square Enix will focus on retaining users through a number of operational initiatives, according to the report, although we already knew this.
