In August 2022, there will be 15 great movies available on streaming ...

Can you believe that August is here? Such as Sam Raimis Spider-Man trilogy, Alex Garlands cerebral sci-fi debut Ex Machina, Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog, and many more are on the way.

In August 2022, here are 15 of the greatest streaming movies to be released.

Belle

Belle follows Suzu, a shy high school student who reintroduces to the vast online world of U in search of a new beginning after her mother's death. After becoming well-known as a digital pop icon, Suzu meets the Dragon, a monstrous character known for his reputation of causing havoc.

This film adaptation of Beauty and the Beast in the digital age is Hosodas' most popular feature to date. It combines the celebrated film's main themes and emotional narrative beats and places them in a stunning new world created by a swath of talented artists across the world.

Belle is now available on HBO Max for streaming.

Constantine

This pre-DC Universe DC film is a very supernatural neo-noir, starring pre-John Wick Keanu Reeves as a very dour John Constantine. Made very much in the style of an old detective thriller (but with supernatural elements), Constantine is a campy fun time with a great cast (Reeves is joined by Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton, and Peter Stormare, among others) and more than a few silly visual gags.

Constantine is now available on Netflix.

Ex Machina

Ex Machina, directed by Alex Garlands, is a young programmer who gets the opportunity to spend a week with Nathan (Oscar Isaac), an elusive tech CEO, at his private and isolated residence. Caleb agrees to participate in Nathan's latest project: a Turing test to measure the intelligence of Ava (Alicia Vikander), an advanced humanoid robot.

Ex Machina is now available for HBO Max subscribers.

Face/Off

John Woos third Hollywood film (following Hard Target and Broken Arrow) is the first where he truly got to use the muscles that make a John Woo film a John Woo film. Face/Off is a delightfully over-the-top 90s action film that thrives on Woos' direction and the two leading performances.

Sean Archer, an FBI agent, was murdered by Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage), a terrorist who planned to kill Archer. In his quest for vengeance, Archer undergoes an experimental face transplant, becoming Troy. Of course, Troy does the same in return, becoming Archer.

Fun fact: When they wrote the script for Face/Off, Mike Werb and Michael Colleary considered Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and I can see it, but im glad we got this one.

Face/Off is now available to stream on Paramount Plus and Prime Video.

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai

Ghost Dog is a modern-day samurai who lives by the code in Hagakure (also known as The Book of the Samurai) but is also mysterious even to those he works with. When Ghost Dog is hired to kill a gangster but leaves an innocent bystander alive, a hit is placed on his life instead.

Whitaker is terrific in his leading role, and Jarmusch's script and direction are perfect. But Ghost Dog takes center stage because of the film's soundtrack, the first film soundtrack to be produced by the RZA. PV

HBO Max has made Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai available for streaming.

Locke

Locke is a contained thriller set entirely in a vehicle. He follows constructionman Ivan Locke (Tom Hardy) as he drives from Birmingham to London the night before a big project. Locke discovers a woman he is having an affair with is about to have their child. As he travels across the country to join her, he juggles conversations on the phone with business associates and family members.

Locke is now available for HBO Max streaming.

Man on Fire

Man on Fire, a 2004 film starring Denzel Washington as a former CIA agent turned bodyguard for a 9-year-old girl in Mexico City, was a film that saw Tony Scott at his finest, delivering a brutal, devastating, and eerie action thriller about a man's quest for redemption and his surrogate love for his charge. With a blistering performance by Harry Gregson-Williams and Lisa Gerrard, Man on Fire is an absolutely electrifying experience

Peacock has the opportunity to stream Man on Fire.

The One

Jet Li plays many, many versions of himself in this 2001 film from James Wong (Final Destination). The plot follows a murderous serial killer traveling across the multiverse to murder all other versions of himself, and the group of people who are attempting to keep him from accomplishing his goal.

Back to the Jet Lis. First you have our main characters protagonist Gabe Law, a police officer, and antagonist Gabriel Yulaw, the previously mentioned homicidal serial killer. Then there's Yu Fook Law (Rastafari Jet Li), Swen Law (surfer Jet Li), Seth Law (Jet Li with long hair), and so much more.

The One is a popular film because of its funky setup, as well as because of Lis' particular set of abilities. Lis personal action director Corey Yuen (Yes, Madam) displays his acrobatic ability with a dynamic energy, particularly in the moments when Li kicks people in midair like soccer balls. Also, Delroy Lindo and Jason Statham (with an American accent and a mostly full head of hair!)

The One is now available on HBO Max.

Prey

Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) has released the latest installment in the long-running Predator series, which takes the sci-fi hero into 18th-century America. Naru (Amber Midthunder) is the only one who notices this imminent danger.

From our analysis:

Prey is a film about a young lady on a collision course with a creepy alien dude in a cool skull mask who other members of the Narus tribe are there to naysay and/or become Predator fodder; a late-arriving band of fur traders also offers up some huntable bodies. Trachtenberg employs a variety of techniques to provide a full view of obstacles, such as a particularly sticky mud pit.

Prey is now available for streaming on Hulu.

Sam Raimis Spider-Man Trilogy

Three of the greatest Marvel films ever released have been licensed on Netflix and Hulu. Yes, I said three.

Sam Raimi's latest Marvel film is out, and more Spider-Man films are coming out every day, allowing us to express our love of his original trilogy of Spider-Man movies. With an excellent cast with fantastic villainous performances, its hard to beat.

The first two films, which are both excellent, are enjoyable, but Id like to take a moment to praise the third one. It's messy, after all, but in a really interesting way (if you can get past the third act or all of the Topher Grace as Venom stuff). Much of this film is about Peter as an inadequate Spidey who, most importantly, becomes a very shitty boyfriend to Mary-Jane.

The Spider-Man trilogy by Sam Raimi is now available on Netflix and Hulu.

Thief

Thief, a 1981 neo-noir heist thriller directed by Michael Mann, stars James Caan (The Godfather), an ex-con and professional safecracker who plans to make a living. Sadly for him, Frank is denied his share of his latest heist, forcing him to accept a job from the Mob in order to break even.

Thief is now available to stream on Prime Video.

Uncut Gems

The Safdies (Good Time) 2019 film is not only one of the finest thrillers you can watch at home, but also one of the finest basketball films. Here, playoff basketball is transformed into a literal life-and-death situation; Uncut Gems is, simply put, a jewel of a movie.

On Peacock, Uncut Gems is available for viewing.

Under the Skin

Under the Skin is a stone-cold thriller from the master Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast) who beautifully paced and slow-burn thriller.

From our list of the best films of the 2010s, here are some of the best films.

Under the Skin, Jonathan Glazer's existential sci-fi horror film about an alien who harvests men for painful and intense purposes, is a bleak story with frightening consequences. (Oh, and a shout-out to Micah Levis' brutal performance.)

Under the Skin is now available on HBO Max.
