The story of theOutlanderprequelBlood of My Bloodjust has become even more interesting and bizarre.
Diana Gabaldon replied to the news that the new series was in the works in a new post on her Facebook page: This doesnt mean that it will be officially released until the end of the year, but rather that it will be planned behind the scenes. Also, she was surprised to learn that she was a consulting producer for the project, given that no one had talked to her about it yet:
I am not aware what a consulting producer is, nor has anyone ever spoken to me about becoming one. This doesn't mean that I will not be involved with the program at the moment.
Yes, I'm going to edit the biography of [Jamie Fraser's parents] Brian and Ellen. I'm not sure what the show's timing might be, or to what extent the show-runners intend to use the book (insofar as it exists at that point). It's just that they're starting to put together the pieces.
For a slew of reasons, all of this is quite bizarre: why would Starz approve the prequel at this point, while also gifting Diana a title she wasn't aware of? A part of it may be simply attempting to strike while the franchise is hot.
Weve learned from the TV industry that they dont usually like waiting hence, them putting the final seasons ofGame of Thrones on the air before George R.R. Martin finished the final books. They may realize that withOutlandergetting deep into its run, they want to broaden their universe somehow. Though we tend to believe that a lot of people would prefer to read Gabaldon's source material before seeing a prequel series on a similar project.
Note thatOutlanderseason 7 is still in development, and you can see a brief reflection from showrunner Matthew B. Roberts on its future here.
