Next year, HBO Max and Discovery+ will merge into one streaming platform ...

HBO Max and Discovery+ will merge into one cohesive streaming platform next year, following a merger of the two parent companies. This is a hugely needed change in the streaming landscape that is becoming increasingly overcrowded.

The recent Warner Bros. and Discovery merger has already caused havoc elsewhere in Hollywood. One of the biggest stories in the industry this week was the decision of the newly combined Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav to cancel the upcoming DC superhero film Batgirl. Although the film was shot and in the editing and test screening phase, releasing it would have cost tens of millions of dollars in additional marketing costs. Zaslav's new leadership is focused on fiscal responsibility and cost cutting, and this led him to cancel several projects on Warners

The most recent news, however, is that things are going well. According to Variety, Warner Bros. Discoverys' CEO and president of global streaming and games, J.B. Perrette, has announced that HBO Max and Discovery+ will be combined into a single service in summer 2023 in the United States, late 2024 in Latin America, early 2024 in Europe, mid 2024 in Asia Pacific, and fall 2024 in other areas.

Perrette has confirmed that a premium subscription option will be offered in the future, as well as a free ad-supported subscription plan. Currently, HBO Max costs $14.99 without ads and $4.99 with, while Discovery+ costs $6.99 without ads and $4.99 with. The new streaming platform will certainly cost at least $14.99 per month, corresponding to HBO Max's current price.

Perrette hopes to avoid churn (the loss of subscribers) by combining the two platforms. HBO Max is well-known for its mature television programming, including Euphoria and Game of Thrones, as well as recent Warner Bros. films such as The Matrix Resurrections and The Batman. Discovery+ is well-known for its documentary and reality programming, which includes Discovery, Animal Planet, Food Network, and more.

According to Warner Bros. Discovery executives, the two platforms will complement each other, describing in a recently released graph how HBO Max has a male skew and Discovery+ a female skew. The new streaming platform will undoubtedly be a powerhouse, as HBO Max, HBO, and Discovery+ have all reported a combined subscriber increase of 22% in the last year.

In the United States, the HBO Max and Discovery+ platform will be launched in the summer of 2023.
