Although there are many iconic biological families in gaming, foster families in gaming tend to stand out less and thus receive less attention from players. Despite this, there is still no shortage of adoptive families that are equally as popular, if not more, than their biological counterparts.
In particular, stepmothers in gaming stand out from the rest of the family, usually taking on the role of the caring mother that is prevalent in gaming. However, one thing remains constant: their devotion to their children is unsurpassed.
9 Elmyra Gainsborough (Final Fantasy 7)
Elmyra discovered a young Aerith caring for her dying mother Ifalna, who requested that she take Aerith somewhere safe. Since then, she has raised Aerith as her own child, despite her little knowledge of Aerith's Cetra abilities.
Elmyra is assigned to look after Marlene while Barret is away, even relocating to Kalm in order to keep her safe. Following news of Aerith's death at the hands of Sephiroth, Elmyra was so moved that she requested a flower bouquet be delivered to the Forgotten City.
Amber 8 Rose (Life is Strange: Before the Storm)
James Amber wed his previous wife due to a drug addiction, and he eventually weds Rose, a stoic lady with an odd sense of humor. She may make her appear uncaring, but her admiration for her stepdaughter Rachel is genuine. She assists her during a school performance of The Tempest.
Rose worries about Rachel's condition while also expressing her gratitude to Chloe for protecting her. She also has a friendly connection with Chloe, as she makes funny remarking about many of the latter's statements.
7 Nyx (Hades)
Nyx, one of the many Chthonic Gods in the game, was responsible for rescuing Zagreus' life at the age of birth by requesting her daughters to resurrect him upon his death. After acquiring Zagreus, she adopted him as her own son, while keeping his true bloodline hidden.
Nyx continues to be Zagreus' true mother, even after his true parentage is revealed to him. She continues to be a source of wisdom and support for him throughout his quest. Nyx has the potential to gift Zagreus important quest items, such as the Black Shawl and the Mirror of Night.
6 Eri Minami (Persona 4)
Eri is faced with the prospect of bonding with her stepson as a result of her spur-of-the-moment decision to marry Yuuta's father. Despite Yuuta's refusal to accept his new mother, it is clear that Eri's main focus and priority is Yuuta's safety and welfare.
Eri and Yuuta have a genuine mother and son bond, although Eri has a good heart. Her impressionable personality often gets her in trouble, thus putting her in jeopardy.
5 Mikoto (Fire Emblem Fates)
Mikoto, Hoshido's gracious Queen, is greatly respected by her children, both biological and adoptive, as well as her people. Even when villains such as Anankos mock her, Mikoto expresses extreme regret for deceiving her children.
Mikoto takes care of her children while displaying a funny side to her, much to the amusement of her adoptive children. On the other hand, she can be very emotional when any harm occurs to her children, as shown when she became concerned about Orochi's fate after the attack on her palace.
4 Samus Aran (Super Metroid)
Samus encounters a baby Metroid, who deems her as its mother upon hatching, and bonds with the pair, both orphans.
Samus makes it a priority to protect the baby Metroid in Super Metroid and sets off to rescue it when Ridley kidnapped it. Upon hearing the hatchling's sacrifice against Mother Brain, Samus mocks the Space Pirates' leader, before falling into a deep depression over her child's death.
3 Brigid Tenenbaum (Bioshock series)
Dr. Tenenbaum, one of the researchers who developed the genetically-mutated Little Sisters, regretted her participation in the project after realizing the negative consequences her experiments had on the little girls. This prompted Tenenbaum to renounce the Little Sisters project and seek a compromise.
Tenenbaum is fiercely protective of the Little Sisters, perhaps due to her faulty conscience in their creation; she once criticizes the player for supposedly trying to harm them. Depending on whether the player chooses to save or harvest the girls, Tenenbaum will either appreciate them for their kindness or berate them for their lack of heart.
2 Misato Kusunose (1bitHeart)
