Danny Trejo, an actor, is adding another film to his extensive arsenal, this time for the historical epic 1521, which will depict Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan's unsuccessful attempt to establish himself on the shores of Homonhon Island in the pre-colonial period, marking the very first documented presence of Europeans in what is now the Philippines.
The Spanish expedition to the Maluku Islands in 1521 failed to arrive at the Philippine island, as Datu Lapu-lapu, an island warrior leader who will be played by Micahel Copon (One Tree Hill), who will portray him. The Battle of Mactan, otherwise known as the victory of Mactan, will be shown in the United States-Philippines production, which will also explore a "forbidden romance" between the native Mactan princess Diwata, portrayed by
Trejo is well-known for his slew of roles, including Michael Mann's criminal noir Heat, and Con Air with Nicolas Cage and John Malkovich. Trejo has been in several films with filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, including Machete, in which Trejo played the titular character alongside Robert De Niro, Desperado, and Spy Kids.
Alonzo, a Filippino actress, has returned to 1521's executive producer and writer after her starring role in their biopic Angel Warrior, and "was previously recognized as a Talent to Watch by Variety and the Internationals Film Festival and Awards Macao in 2019." Other feature credits include One More Chance, The Love Affair, Four Sisters and a Wedding.
Hector David Jr. (Power Rangers Samurai) as Enrique, Magellan's translator, Costas Mandylor (Saw V) as Lorenzo, and Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan (Hello, Love, Goodbye) as Ahmani, Diwata's sister.
Francis B. Lara Ho of Inspire Studio is the producer of 1521, a biographical action film that will be released in August. The Rescue is a heroic true account of a rescue mission created by Mary Krell-Oishi, who directed it.
1521 is in pre-production, and there is currently no release date.
