Seth MacFarlane, the author of The Orville, believes that the space adventure series' chances for a Season 4 renewal are currently 50-50, but a fresh development has the potential, at least, to steer the series in the right direction.
Fox approved Season 3 weeks back in May 2019; weeks later, it was announced that the series would relocate to Hulu with an eye on a late 2020 return date. COVID-related days famously resulted in filming not finishing until August 2021, shortly after which the casts contract options expired.
Meaning, if Hulu (or anyone) were to want a Season 4, the cast would need to be re-grouped and (hopefully) re-signed.
If the show and its fans are so fortunate with a Season 4 order, MacFarlane would make it happen.
If there is a Season 4, I will say that I am as invested in the program as any of the viewers, as he attested.
MacFarlane said that his hope is that when The Orville launches on Disney+, those who haven't yet discovered it will give it a shot. That's a potential game changer for us.
When people sit down to watch it, I think it upends their expectations, according to the producer. People assume that the program is one thing, but when they see it, they realize that it's quite another. Once people get hooked on it, the program does the job, and people tend to fall in love.
