The Best HBO Max Originals and Where to Watch them ...

HBO Max has undergone a lot of changes in the two-ish years since it was launched in May 2020. At its inception, the service struggled to differentiate itself for many consumers from HBO (an understandable source of confusion), and it's taken a long road to becoming one of the finest streaming libraries available.

All Warner Bros. films premiered on HBO Max on the same day as their theatrical debut in 2021. That changed in 2022 to a 45-day window movies like The Batman had to wait at least 45 days before coming to the streaming platform.

The in-progress Batgirl film, which was originally slated to be an HBO Max original, was canceled. Under the new CEO, David Zaslav, he will emphasize scripted content that goes straight to streaming services rather than big theatrical productions.

To reduce costs, quite a few HBO Max originals have been removed from the service (even though they are HBO Max originals, they still have licensing fees to remain on the platform). Fortunately, these originals can be viewed elsewhere, through digital rental or other means.

We have gathered our favorites HBO Max original films and series, as well as where you can find them right now. These does not include HBO shows like Westworld or Barry, as they are not HBO Max originals. Some of these selections are still on HBO Max, while some are not, and we will update this list as new information becomes available.

The best HBO Max original series

Our Flag Means Death

Our Flag Means Death is a tiny pirate boat that can, without sacrificing time and stamina, produce spectacular entertainment that lasts forever. And yet, it was so effective. As part engaging comedy and part emotionally charged love story, Our Flag found genuine poignancy while also being straight-up delightful.

Our Flag Means Death is still available on HBO Max.

Peacemaker

It is with the utmost sincerity that we continue to acknowledge how superb John Cena is at playing Peacemaker, a well-known comic book hero of our time; coming off a horrifying role in The Suicide Squad; and remaining a team player while still ensuring global peace.

Cena maneuvers the Peacemaker character through tricky terrain like an angry, soaring eagle. However, the main reason a second season on HBO Max is so exciting is because Cena's performance can clearly handle anything the show throws at him. Be it aliens or alienated emotions, Peacemaker is up to the task.

Peacemaker is still available on HBO Max.

Hacks

The first season of HBO Max was not part of its development, but this acidic, moving, Emmy-winning comedy has set a new standard for streaming comedy, avoiding the usual bloat and pacing issues. They have also been able to create a compelling two-hander that has no boundaries.

Hacks is still available on HBO Max.

FBoy Island

Fboy Island is the only show on this list that is most likely to be gone. Reality shows are notoriously inexpensive to produce, and this one has a humdinger of a premise that might easily be sold to another network. (During an episode of his podcast Homestuck Made This World)

Three women are on an island, like an island resort, with oh, let's say 20 men. And everyone is super hot. It's half The Bachelorette, half a game of Mafia. Okay? Like, the online forum game. Or, Among Us. Because half of the men are there to really find love, blah blah blah blah blah

The most fun part of the Bachelor/ette franchise is figuring out which contestants are there for the right reasons, and which ones are fuckboys. What if that were the whole point of the show, anyway? This is, apparently, how former Bachelor co-executive producer Elan Gale came up with the concept for Fboy Island.

The only problem with this is that it will make you start saying fboy instead of fuckboy in your regular vocabulary, because the program does not remove the f-bomb, and over time, fboy begins to sound like an actual normal word. Which isn't.

FBoy Island is still available on HBO Max.

Station Eleven

The adaptation of the Emily St. John Mandels award-winning novel follows a devastation pandemic and the altered society that develops as a result of it. Station Eleven is at times challenging, at times hopeful, and always worthwhile.

From our evaluation, here's what we've learned.

Station Eleven is a unique pandemic media that dwells less on the heroism of a solution, or the joy of a core cause, but more on the idea of community and the creation of art. Its a thread that keeps episodes together; its a reason to be alive.

Station Eleven is still available on HBO Max.

An American Pickle

An American Pickle, a warm, funny tale about family bonding over generations and what is gained and lost over time, is a very different sort of Seth Rogen comedy (although it certainly has its moments of slapstick humor). One hundred years later, Herschel wakes up in a different Brooklyn and connects with his great-grandson, Ben Greenbaum, a somewhat clueless youngster who develops games.

The two Greenbaums discussing their different Judaism traditions and the ways in which generations of assimilation in another culture can alter your relationship with your heritage are the most enjoyable scenes in American Pickles.

Brandon Trost, who co-directed the dance dance revolution-style comedy The FP with his brother Jason, has made his solo directorial debut.

On VOD platforms, an American Pickle is available for digital rental or purchase.

Kimi

Jimmy Stewart plays a bored man with a broken leg who passes his time healing by watching his neighbors and soon discovers that one of them is a murderer who must be punished in Steven Soderbergh's crime thriller.

Zoe Kravitz stars as an agoraphobic tech worker who works remotely; everyone is staying home and social distancing, so our heroine has as many neighbors to watch as the hero of Rear Window. However, she is unable to go outside even with the aid of a mask, which limits her ability to do anything about it when she discovers a murder.

She does not witness the murder through a neighbor's window, however. In her job as a tech worker, she performs diagnostics for an in-home gadget called Kimi, which works identical to Amazon's Alexa, recording its owners' voices and obeying simple commands. Or, in the case of Kimi, unwittingly recording a murder in progress. It's the perfect modern twist with a high-octane denouement during which our heroine must brave the outdoors but also the

Kimi is still available on HBO Max to watch.

No Sudden Move

No Sudden Move is a film about Steven Soderbergh's dark past, which happens to include a lot of small-time criminals and gangsters who took part in Detroit's underworld in the mid-1950s. These are the first characters we encounter, all of whom are well-known, and all acting with casual, careless racism.

No Sudden Move is still available on HBO Max.

Zack Snyders Justice League

I understand why a lot of people dislike this film or are unwilling to engage with it. The controversies, accusations, and warring fan groups are enough to keep anyone away. On the other hand, youll see one of the finest superhero films ever made, a four-hour space opera epic (in the correct use of that word, not the bacon one) from a filmmaker who cares deeply about the subject matter and was finally able to complete a project interrupted by personal tragedy.

On HBO Max, Zack Snyder's Justice League is still available to watch.
