A member of The Voice's cast has retaliated against a lawsuit ...

Taylor Swift, a former The Voice mega mentor and music sensation, claims she never saw 3LW before she composed the song Shake It Off in response to a lawsuit filed by the band.

According to court filings obtained by NPR, Swift told a federal court that she wrote Shake It Off, which came out in 2014 completely by herself.

Sean Hall and Nathan Butler, the producers of Playas Gon Play, a song released in 2000, are suing the singer, alleging that she copied the lyrics of their song for Shake It Off.

According to USA Today, the songwriters filed a lawsuit against copyright infringement in 2017 but it was originally dismissed in 2018. The judge at the time decided that the songs were too minor to be stolen. The appeal was reignited and Swifts' request for dismissal in December 2021 was denied by a judge who found the cases to be objective.

The Lawsuit Alleges Swift Stole Lyrics

Swift is accused of stealing lyrics from the 2001 song. They point to the lyrics playas, they gonna play, and haters, they gonna hate. In Shake It Off, Swift sings, the players gonna play, play, play, and the haters gonna hate, hate, and hate.

Swift's response to the suit states that the words players gonna play and haters gonna hate are both used in popular culture at the time of her writing the song, and she wrote it about self-determination and removing negative personal criticism through music and dance.

Swift explained in his response that while writing the lyrics, I drew on personal experiences and, in particular, unrelenting public scrutiny of my personal life, clickbait reporting, public manipulation, and other forms of negative personal criticism, all of which I learned I just needed to get rid of and concentrate on my music.

The Outsiders, by Eric Church, is a song that includes the players' lyrics and a haters' lyrics that they'll hate. The song was performed at the Country Music Awards in 2013, one year before Shake It Off was released.

Swift wore a t-shirt with a unicorn and a thought bubble that said haters will hate in 2013. The star says she purchased the shirt at Urban Outfitters in 2013.

Swift Says She Never Knew the Song

In her response to the lawsuit, Swift claims that she had never seen the music video or saw 3LW live.

I have never seen a Playas Gon Play music video, never attended a concert where 3LW performed, nor any recording of Playas Gon Play. I do not own any 3LW albums or singles, nor any recording of Playas Gon Play. 6 or Now Thats What I Call Music! 7. I did not talk about Playas Gon Play or 3LW with anyone prior to this lawsuit.

She said she never subscribed to Billboard magazine and she had never seen anything in the magazine until after I moved to Nashville and became immersed in the music business.

The next hearing in the case will be held on September 19, 2022.

The Voice will return to NBC on September 19, 2022. Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Camila Cabello, and John Legend will lead coaches for the season.
