How fast does Marvels Spider-Man load on PC, Steam Deck, PS4 and PS5? ...

Marvels Spider-Man is a fantastic superhero game for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players. It's also available to a whole new group of Spidey enthusiasts with its recent PC release.

Since Marvels Spider-Man is now playable on three platforms (and Steam Deck, which is basically a platform unto itself), we decided to do some testing. How does Spider-Man stack up against PS5?

Let's run some tests to answer those questions, and see how quick Spidey can go.

How fast is the fast-travel load time?

As Spidey in Marvels Spider-Man moves rapidly around New York, it becomes much quicker. Instantly teleporting from one side of Manhattan to the other via the games fast-travel system.

For this test, I set up the remastered Marvels Spider-Man on my work PC (Intel i7-10700K processor, 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, and a Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card), my Steam Deck (loading off of my Samsung EVO 512 GM microSD card), and my PS5.

I sped up to the police station in Harlem and to the FEAST homeless shelter in Chinatown, where I placed the stopwatch when I opened fast travel (after I had pressed the button to confirm where I wanted to go) and stopped it when I regained control of Spider-Man. I repeated each test at least five times until I had a consistent range of results.

From the quickest to the slowest, here are my results:

  • PC: 2.8-3.5 seconds
  • PS5: 3-3.1 seconds
  • Steam Deck: 6-8 seconds
  • PS4: 17-20 seconds

In these tests, my PC and PS5 were extremely close, with PS5 being the most stable platform.

What about the boot-up?

For the second test, I wanted to see how quickly the game could get me into the open world from the start menu. I started my timer as I hit the continue button, and stopped it when I recovered control of Spider-Man.

For this second test, I used the same equipment as I did for the first, and always made sure to load Spider-Man at the same location (the FEAST rooftop). I loaded from the menu at least three times on each platform, until I reached a consistent range with only one major deviation.

Here are my results, from the quickest to the slowest:

  • PS5: 2 seconds
  • PC: 2.9-3.35 seconds
  • Steam Deck: 7-13 seconds
  • PS4: 35 seconds

The aforementioned error for this test was the initial load on my Steam Deck: The first time I booted up the game for the test session, it took 22 seconds to start. Every other time, it took at least nine seconds longer than that.

So, which platform is fastest?

Both my PS5 and my PC were neck-and-neck for both tests. Both make excellent platforms to play the remastered Marvels Spider-Man. (While both are comparable in load times, the PC gets the extra benefit of Steam Decks' cloud save functionality.)

For running off an SD card, Steam Deck performed admirably given how big Marvels Spider-Man is. Its certainly significantly slower than a good desktop PC or a modern console.

During these experiments, PS4 brings up the rear, taking nearly three times longer than Steam Deck to load into the same area. Marvels Spider-Man is still worth checking out on PS4, even if its just a throwback to the great Marvels Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
