Gen Con 2022's most tense board games

Gen Con 2022's most tense board games ...

For me, Gen Con 2022 was like returning. After nearly two decades of attending board gaming Super Bowl, Ive developed some very close friends who I look forward to seeing every year. We werent interested in playing the latest Euro-style game, or a big, sprawling Ameritrash strategy game. We just wanted to have a lark, and the variety of new games we had on offer perfectly suited our requirements.

In fact, I think the best Gen Con games this year were the lightest, most frivolous things you could imagine. But more than anything, the best games this year were chaotic, including the title that might just be my personal game of the show.

Psychic Pizza Deliverers Go to the Ghost Town

Psychic Pizza Deliverers Go to the Ghost Town is a hidden-environment game for 3-5 players. Notice that I didnt use hidden movement in this game like Nuns on the Run, Last Friday, Letters to Whitechapel, or Specter Ops. The objective is to discover and deliver a pizza to the people who live in Ghost Town.

For $39.00 direct from the publisher, you may purchase Psychic Pizza Deliverers Go to the Ghost Town directly from Board Game Tables Dot Com.

Polygon Recommends is our way of recommending our favorite games. When we award a game the Polygon Recommends badge, it's because we believe it's unique, entertaining, inventive, or educational, and worthwhile to include it in your schedule. Check out Polygon Essentials.

Here's a quick recap of the rest of the most popular new titles in alphabetical order.

Boop

Boop is the latest game from Smirk & Laughter Games that is absolutely adorable. Inside youll find a set of wooden cat meeples and a plush comforter. Turn the inside of the box over, place the comforter on top, and proceed to boop your opponents in a match-three match-control fiasco.

Boop will be available shortly.

Cat in the Box

Cat in the Box is a card game that involves playing Hearts, Spades, Euchre, and Pinochle. All of the cards are black, and players select the color or number of cards they need to play to avoid going to the board. For instance, if for whatever reason you break the board logic by playing a card that is missing, all of the points you have earned so far turn negative.

For $29.95, Cat in the Box is now available directly from the publisher.

Kites

When I open a board game, the first thing I throw out is the punchboard. If there is one, it's just as annoying to it. Players take turns playing cards that correspond to the timers, attempting to keep all of these kites in the air before their sand runs out.

Kites are available now for $20 off.

Ready Set Bet

Ruel Gaviola told the assembled influencers that he both designed and contributed to the companion app's visualization. This way your family members who like playing Ticket to Ride can compete on a fairly equal playing field.

Ready Set Bet will cost $39.99 and will be available for purchase later this year.

Reality Shift

Academy Games is well-known for its historical simulations and strategy games. Reality Shift is a beautiful game that is inspired by Tron's iconic lightcycle racing. Only you have to live till you have thrown it into the back straightaway, derezing your opponent and sending them back to the starting line.

Reality Shift was only available this year at GenCon, with the premium set priced at $65. Expect to get the chance to purchase it soon.
