How quickly does Marvels Spider-Man load on PC, Steam Deck, PS4 and PS5? ...

Marvels Spider-Man is a great superhero game for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and with its recent PC release, its available to a whole new generation of Spidey enthusiasts.

Since Marvels Spider-Man is now available on three platforms (and Steam Deck, which is a platform unto itself), we decided to do some testing. How does it stack up to PS5?

Let's do a few tests to answer those questions and see how quickly Spidey can go.

How fast is the fast-travel load time?

As Spidey goes around New York, it's quite quick in Marvels Spider-Man. But what's quicker? Instantly teleporting from one side of Manhattan to the other using the games fast-travel system.

For this test, I set up the remastered Marvels Spider-Man on my work PC (Intel i7-10700K processor, 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, and a Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card), my Steam Deck (loading off of my Samsung EVO 512 GM microSD card), and my PS5.

For the test, I fast traveled back and forth between the Harlem police station and the Chinatown homeless shelter. I started my stopwatch the moment I started fast travel (after I'd held down the button to confirm where I wanted to go) and stopped it as soon as I regained control of Spider-Man. I ran each test at least five times until I obtained a consistent range of results.

Here are my results, from the most efficient to the slowest:

  • PC: 2.8-3.5 seconds
  • PS5: 3-3.1 seconds
  • Steam Deck: 6-8 seconds
  • PS4: 17-20 seconds

In these tests, my PC and my PS5 were extremely close, with PS5 being the most used platform.

What about the boot-up?

For the second test, I wanted to see how quickly the game could get me into the open world from the start menu. I started my timer as soon as I hit the continue button and stopped it when I recovered control of Spider-Man.

For the second test, I used all of the same equipment as I used for the first, and always made sure to load Spider-Man at the same location (the FEAST rooftop). I loaded from the menu at least three times on each platform, until I reached a consistent range with only one major deviation.

Here are my results, from the quickest to the slowest:

  • PS5: 2 seconds
  • PC: 2.9-3.35 seconds
  • Steam Deck: 7-13 seconds
  • PS4: 35 seconds

The initial load for my Steam Deck was caused by the aforementioned error: The first time I booted up the game for the test session, it took 22 seconds. Every other time, it took at least nine seconds faster.

So, which platform is fastest?

Both my PS5 and my PC were neck-and-neck for both tests. Both make excellent games for Marvel's Remastered Spider-Man. (While both are comparable in load times, the PC has the additional benefit of Steam Decks' cloud save capability.)

It was quite impressive considering how big Marvels Spider-Man is. It's certainly slower than a good desktop PC or a modern console, but for running off an SD card, I was impressed.

During these tests, PS4 brings up the rear, taking nearly three times longer than Steam Deck to load in the same area. Marvels Spider-Man is still worth checking out on PS4, despite components that havent aged well at all, even if its just a jumping off point for the superb Marvels Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
