How fast does Marvel's Spider-Man load on PC, Steam Deck, PS4 and PS5? ...

Marvels Spider-Man is a superb superhero game for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It's also available for a whole new generation of Spidey enthusiasts with its recent PC release.

Since Marvels Spider-Man is now playable on three platforms (and Steam Deck, which is a platform unto itself), we decided to do a bit of testing. How does Spider-Man perform in comparison to the original PS4 version?

Lets run some tests to answer those questions and see how fast Spidey can go.

How fast is the fast-travel load time?

Spidey is moving around New York as quickly as in Marvels Spider-Man. But who knows whats faster? Instantly teleporting from one side of Manhattan to the other via the games fast-travel system.

For this test, I setup the remastered Marvels Spider-Man on my work PC (Intel i7-10700K processor, 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, and a Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card), my Steam Deck (loading off my Samsung EVO 512 GM microSD card), and my PS5 Slim.

I took the test in droves back and forth between the Harlem police station and the Chinatown homeless shelter. I started my stopwatch as soon as I had regained control of Spider-Man. I ran each test at least five times until I achieved a consistent range of results.

Here are my results, from the most slick to the most slowest:

  • PC: 2.8-3.5 seconds
  • PS5: 3-3.1 seconds
  • Steam Deck: 6-8 seconds
  • PS4: 17-20 seconds

In these tests, my PC and PS5 were extremely close, with PS5 being the most reliable platform.

What about the boot-up?

I wanted to see how quickly the game would get me into the open world from the start menu for the second test. I started my timer as I hit the continue button and stopped it as soon as I regained control of Spider-Man.

For this second test, I used all the same equipment as I did for the first, and always made sure to load Spider-Man at the same time (the FEAST rooftop). I loaded from the menu at least three times on each platform, until I achieved a consistent range with only one major deviation.

Here are my results, from the very fastest to the most slowest:

  • PS5: 2 seconds
  • PC: 2.9-3.35 seconds
  • Steam Deck: 7-13 seconds
  • PS4: 35 seconds

The first time I booted up the game for the test session, it took 22 seconds. Every other time, it took at least nine seconds longer than that.

So, which platform is fastest?

Both the PS5 and the PC were neck-and-neck for both tests. Both are great places to watch Marvel's Spider-Man, especially when it comes to load times. (While both are similar in load times, the PC has the added benefit of Steam Decks cloud save functionality.)

When it comes to Steam Deck, it worked quite well considering how big Marvels Spider-Man is. It's obviously significantly slower than a good desktop PC or a modern console, but for running off an SD card, I was surprised how little time I spent waiting.

During these tests, PS4 brings up the rear, taking about three times longer than Steam Deck to load into the same area. Marvels Spider-Man is still worth checking out on PS4, even if it's just a starting point for the excellent Marvels Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
