'Joker 2' to Include "Complicated Musical Sequences" ...

With the Discovery+ and Warner Bros. merger, Joker: Folie a Deux, it appears to be the last man standing. Other projects are still in the works, but the sequel to the Joker film, which grossed $1.07 billion worldwide, is still on their priority list, and a fresh look into the Warner Bros. Discovery merger and their line-up gives us a glimpse into the film as a whole and where they're going.

According to a new Variety article, Lady Gaga will be playing Harley Quinn, while director Todd Phillips will earn $20 million along with star Joaquin Phoenix. This means that the sequel will cost around $150 million to produce.

Phoenix played Arthur Fleck, a clown and "comedian" who became a mockery, and was intended as a commentary on mental health. While the film did not follow the Joker's comic lore, we did see some familiar faces like Thomas Wayne and a young Bruce leading to the Wayne family's death time and time again.

The use of A Star Is Born and In the Heights as comparisons is curious, since both were Warner Bros. Pictures, so maybe they just wanted to include their own musical scores as an example? Possibly, it also implies that Joker: Folie a Deux will be built into the narrative as a diagetic performance, as it was in A Star Is Born. The same insider claims that the film will have "complicated musical sequences," increasing the film's budget.

It makes sense to have a musical component to Gaga's role as Harley Quinn. We know Gaga best for her music, and so combining them again a la A Star Is Born has me interested in the film in a way that I was not prior to these announcements. However, there are still many unanswered questions about Joker: Folie a Deux, and the musical theatre kid in me wants to know what A Star Is Born vs. In The Heights actually means.
