Marvels Spider-Man is a fantastic superhero game for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. With its most recent PC release, the game is now available to a whole new group of Spidey lovers.
Since Marvels Spider-Man is now playable on three platforms (and Steam Deck, which is basically a platform unto itself) we decided to do a little testing. Just how fast does Spider-Man load on PC vs. Steam Deck? What about PC vs the original PS4 version? How does PC compare to PS5?
Let's run a few tests to answer those questions, and see how quick Spidey can go.
How fast is the fast-travel load time?
Spidey is swimming around New York in Marvels Spider-Man. But whats quicker is instant teleporting from one side of Manhattan to the other via the games fast-travel system.
For this test, I installed the remastered Marvels Spider-Man on my work PC (Intel i7-10700K processor, 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, and a Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card), my Steam Deck (loading off my Samsung EVO 512 GM microSD card), and my PS5.
I began my stopwatch the moment I started fast travel (after I had held down the button to confirm where I wanted to go) and stopped it as soon as I recovered Spider-Man's control. I ran each test at least five times until I got a good standard of results.
Here are my results, from the most rapid to the slowest:
- PC: 2.8-3.5 seconds
- PS5: 3-3.1 seconds
- Steam Deck: 6-8 seconds
- PS4: 17-20 seconds
In these tests, my PC and my PS5 were very close, with PS5 being the most consistent platform.
What about the boot-up?
For the second test, I wanted to see how quickly the game would send me into the open world from the start menu. I started my timer as soon as I hit the continue button and stopped it when I recovered control of Spider-Man.
For the second test, I used the same equipment as I used for the first, and always made sure to load Spider-Man in the same spot (the FEAST rooftop). I loaded from the menu at least three times on each platform until I got a consistent range with only one major deviation.
Here are my results, from the quickest to the slowest:
- PS5: 2 seconds
- PC: 2.9-3.35 seconds
- Steam Deck: 7-13 seconds
- PS4: 35 seconds
The aforementioned snag for this test was the first load on my Steam Deck: The first time I booted up the game for the test session, it took 22 seconds to get started. Every other time, it took at least nine seconds longer than that.
So, which platform is fastest?
Both the PS5 and the PC were neck-and-neck for both tests. Both are great places to watch Marvel's Spider-Man, as they both have a similar load times. PC has the added benefit of Steam Decks cloud save functionality.
When it came to Steam Deck, it was quite adequate considering how huge Marvels Spider-Man is. It's obviously significantly slower than a good desktop PC or a modern console, but I was impressed with how little time I spent waiting for it.
During these experiments, PS4 brings up the back seat, taking almost three times longer than Steam Deck to load into the same area. Marvels Spider-Man is still worth checking out on PS4, even if its just a replacement for the excellent Marvels Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
