The 12 Best Ancient Rome Games

The 12 Best Ancient Rome Games ...

Ancient Rome was a fascinating and extremely historically significant civilization. It has inspired art, literature, and, of course, video games. However, there are dozens of games about Rome and its history, so how do you know which ones are the best? Here are 12 of them.

Rome: Total War

The original Rome: Total War, one of Sega's and Creative Assembly's Total War series, is a classic of the grand strategy and mass battle genre. Whats more, it's still worth a decade of playing it.

Total War: Rome II

Some purists dislike the changes Rome II made, but this is one of the best Roman Empire management games out there. It removes some of the fat from the previous game and allows you to concentrate on the things you care about.

Imperator Rome

Imperator Rome is a richly detailed character simulator for history lovers. It's a more nuanced and complex game than many might expect.

Caesar III

Caesar, an older game that positioned you in the position of one of Rome's most famous architects and city builders, is still as fun and engaging as it was when it was released. With charming isometric sprite graphics, and a challenging gameplay loop, this retro city-building game will push you to the limit, and see you executed by Caesar himself if you fail!

Praetorians is a traditional 3D Real Time Strategy (RTS) game that focuses on guiding you through a narrative RTS while in command of a Roman Legion. This game's intense combat and satisfying style will definitely grab your attention. It's more micro-management focused than some of the others on this list.

Ryse: Son of Rome

This is the first 3D action game on this list, and there's a simple way to describe it: It's basically Gladiator: The Game. It's not that the plot is uncannily similar, but you should just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition

The original Age of Empires and its Rise of Rome expansion are some of the finest games ever set in the ancient world. The Definitive Edition includes all expansions, dozens of campaigns, and all factions, including the Romans.

Spartan: Total Warrior

Spartan: Total Warrior is a hack and slash action game inspired by Dynasty Warriors. There are many mythological twists that see you defeat the Colossus and Cyclops.

Shadow of Rome

Shadow of Rome, a brutal and arcade-like hack and slash game from Capcom, is one of the most stylistically unique games on the list. This is an over-the-top slasher that feels more like a Devil May Cry game took place in Ancient Rome.

Assassins Creed: Origins

Origins crossed Ancient Rome off its list with a 2017 entry. If you've played all of the previous installments, you'll love this Roman-themed version!

Total War: Atilla

Atilla is probably the least Roman adjacent to another Total War game, owing to the fact that rather than playing the empire at its height, as in most games, you stay in control of the empire close to its collapse. This is perhaps the most difficult Total War to involve Rome.

Colosseum: Road to Freedom

Koei, the creator of Dynasty Warriors, had seen the mixed success of games such as Shadow of Rome and Spartan: Total Warrior, and decided to join the fun with Colosseum: Road to Freedom, a more combo-focused hack and slash that focuses on escaping from the existence of a gladiator.
