Kirby Howell-Baptiste, THE PERFORMER

The Sandman | Netflixs The Show | The Sandman

The EPISODE | The Sound of Her Wings (Aug. 5, 2022)

THE PERFORMANCE | It may sound bizarre to say we want more Death in our lives, but now that The Sandmans first season is available on Netflix, that's certainly the case.

Although she only appears in one episode, the Good Place alum instantly commands the screen and provides a wonderful foil for the shows highly emo title character, from the casual way she leans back against a park bench to the gentle kneel down by an elderly mans chair, chatting happily with him until she departs to the afterlife.

Death acknowledges Morpheus that she has been around for a long time, and what used to be displeasure for her job has evolved into an appreciation for its uniqueness and responsibility: Her warm smiles and gentle touches as she approaches those who are dying demonstrate the character's commitment to her purpose.

The greatest part of Howell-Baptistes' performance, though, is her willingness to admit Death's refusal to take herself and especially her brooding brother too seriously. All of them made us wish she was around more in the first season (and I hope she will be in a future Season 2).

HONORABLE MENTION | Li Jun Lis Grace, the recurring prophetess of Evils reached new heights in Sundays episode, as she faced both silly and sweet (offering Laura much-needed hope in the ball pit), and then was abandoned with good reason and to great effectiveness! as she sobbed and prayed over Monsignor Korecki's terrible death.

HONORABLE MENTION | There was no predicting how the Westworld reunion between Frankie and Caleb, which was so long in the works, would unfold. Second, there was savage intensity when Caleb didnt recognize his rescuer and thus pinned her against a wall. Third, there were warm tears of appreciation over each actor as they processed the unlikely.

Carol Burnett gave us a surprising and heartbreaking performance as Jeffs elderly mother Marion. She then had nerves of steel as Marion confronted Gene about his lies and secret identity, even claiming, "I trusted you."
