While The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is about to reintroduce fans to J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, there are still exciting developments on the Lord of the Rings video game front. Although the Lord of the Rings: Gollum is still on the way, a recent announcement suggests that weta Workshop is working on a future game inspired by Tolkien's writing.
Weta Workshop is a New Zealand-based prop and special effects company well-known for constructing the Middle-earth featured in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy. Some of the most iconic setpieces from the films include Weta's handiwork the white city Minas Tirith, Osgiliath, Rivendell, Sauron's tower Barad-dur, and more.
Although there are little specifics about the game, it's possible that Weta Workshop has been working on it for a long time. In 2014, the company created an interactive division with an eye toward making video games, and, last year, it was revealed that they had a then-unknown title in the works, with Middle-earth Enterprises giving Weta "the broadest creative license to interpret the underlying lore of the books."
Private Division, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, has worked with several well-known indie games in the past, including Roll7's Olli-Olli World, Obsidian Entertainment's The Outer Worlds, and Supergiant Games' Hades. Their next game, Rollerdrome, also from Roll7, is due out later this year.
"We're delighted to collaborate with Weta Workshop to develop a game set in an extraordinary and famous world," said Michael Worosz, Chief Strategy Officer at Take-Two Interactive and Head of Private Division in the release. No organization is better equipped than Weta Workshop to create a unique and innovative Middle-earth gaming experience."
Amie Wolken, Weta Workshop's head of interactive communications, also issued a statement recognizing the company's return to Middle-earth, stating: "Weta Workshop is grateful."
It's a pleasure to work on a new game set in Middle-earth, especially one that's completely different from what fans have seen previously. As fans ourselves, we're eager for gamers to explore Middle-earth in a way they've never before, and introduce new fans to the magic of The Lord of the Rings.
It's a joy to work on a new Middle-Earth game, especially one that's completely different from what fans have previously played. We've been enthralled for gamers to experience Middle-earth in a way they've never seen before, and introduce new fans to the magic of The Lord of the Rings.
The Lord of the Rings game from Weta Workshop is expected to be available in Take-Two's fiscal year 2024. Check out the Private Division's announcement here.
