Mads Mikkelsen is contemplating whether Johnny Depp may reprise his role in the Fantastic Beasts franchise following the defamation lawsuit filed against Amber Heard.

After Depp lost a UK libel prosecution in November 2020 relating to Amber Heard's abuse allegations, Mikkelsen took over the role of Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, the third Harry Potter prequel film. (The film was released in March 2022.)

Now that the course has changed, Mikkelsen has told Deadline about Depps possibility of returning. He might. I think Johnny is an amazing actor. He did a fantastic job.

Mikkelsen has been open about how intimidating it was to put his spin on Depp's franchise character.

Mikkelsen continued: I couldn't just copy something from him, it would be creative suicide. So, we had to come up with something else, something that was mine, and build a bridge between him and me. It was scary. His fans were very kind, but they were also very stubborn. I could understand why they were hurt.

Depp may reprise his iconic role as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, although no casting announcement has been made.

Depp is making his return to the big screen by playing Jeanne du Barry as King Louis XV, as well as directing the biopic Modigliani inspired by Amedeo Modigliani, 25 years after the release of The Brave in 1997. The film is adapted for screen by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski (The Pledge).

Modigliani plans to complete production in Europe in Spring 2023, with casting to be announced shortly. In 1916, Modiglianis spent two days in Paris, which marked a crucial moment for his career.

Im incredibly honored, and profoundly humbled, to bring Depp's life to the screen, according to a press release. It was a life of great hardship, but his triumph is a universally human event that everyone can relate to.
