After 28 years at University Challenge, Jeremy Paxman is retiring ...

After 28 years as host of University Challenge, Jeremy Paxman has announced his retirement.

Paxman has been at the helm of the BBC quiz program since 1994. His final series will air in the autumn, with his final episode scheduled for next summer.

Paxman said in a statement about his nearly three decades on the show: "I've had a blast hosting this wonderful series for over 29 years.

"I've been blessed to work with an amazing group and meet some of the country's top swottier brains. It gives me hope for the future."

The former Newsnight presenter announced that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's a year ago. It was recently confirmed that he's been making a documentary for ITV about his diagnosis.

The BBC has confirmed that Paxman's replacement will be announced as the host of the University Challenge later this week.

Paxman is only the second presenter to host the long-running quiz show. Bamber Gascoigne took over as presenter from 1962 to 1987.

Paxman will be "sorely missed" by the crew, contestants, and viewers, according to Peter Gwyn, the executive producer of University Challenge.

"Jeremy has been our presenter, colleague, and friend for twenty-eight years, and everyone on the University Challenge production team will miss him greatly," he said.

"He'll be sorely missed by both our audience and by the generations of students who've embraced the opportunity to compete in more than a thousand matches."

Unscripted's director, Kate Phillips, was also praised by Paxman for his role in making the program a success.

"Jeremy has been at the forefront and center of the show's success since the BBC reinstated University Challenge in 1994, and is without doubt one of the world's finest, and most powerful quizmasters.

"We are deeply grateful to Jeremy for his dedication to the program for an incredible 28 years, and he will be greatly missed by everyone and the show's millions of viewers."

A documentary will air on BBC Two on Monday, August 29 at 9pm, the same night as Paxman's final series of the program begins.

University Challenge airs on BBC Two and is available on BBC iPlayer.
