Hugh Bonneville of Downton Abbey discusses a possible show spin-off ...

Hugh Bonneville, who plays Downton Abbey, has suggested that a spin-off from the program may not be in the cards.

While the TV series came to an end seven years ago, it has since produced two movies, the most recent being A New Era, which was released just a few months ago.

The Lord Grantham actor admitted that a third big screen appearance might not happen, although he did indicate that there might be a spin-off of some sort.

"I don't know [whether or not] we'll see more," he told the Radio Times.

"I know there's a whole world of fandom that creates all the legends about what happened before, or after, and sideways from our stories, but there's only really one story creator, and that is Julian Fellowes, so I'm not sure where he'd take his characters next or what aspect of these characters' lives he'd like to investigate."

"It's up to him," he said, if there are any further iterations to come. However, I can see that there's a whole world of renewed interest in this era, and certainly in the last ten years, there's been a resurgent interest in historical drama.

"There are a slew of approaches that might be explored."

Were curious what these possibilities might be.

Bonneville noted that rethinking on A New Era, which introduced a number of new members to the family, was "a really wonderful new direction" for the story to go.

"And obviously it took us abroad, which was even more interesting." Julian draws on so many different strands of his own history and other stories and weaves them all together into these tapestries that he creates to give everyone a little bit of time in the sun. And for Robert to be able to question his own existence in a way was really interesting."

Bonneville said back in June that Downton had "run its course," putting an end to prospects of a third film.

"I think it was a good time to quit." he told The Hollywood Reporter. I'm never going to second-guess the future, but I did think for a while, "Actually, why not, let's keep going."

"But I do think it might be a bit thin." "I think the second film was a joyous one, and it felt like it could conclude."
