Ruth Wilson (The Affair) and Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) have joined the cast of the new BBC and Showtime series The Woman in the Wall in leading roles. The series is inspired by Ireland's Magdalene Laundries scandal, also known as the Magdalene asylums.

Lorna Brady will be played by Wilson while McCormack will play Detective Colman Akande. The 60-minute, six-episode gothic thriller by Joe Murtagh will follow Lorna, who awakens one day to discover a dead woman in her house, without any idea of who the victim is or if she is the murderer.

Wilson made a statement about playing Lorna Brady's character alongside the casting announcement.

Lorna Brady is a complicated and fascinating character who I'm thrilled to assist in her coming to life. Joe has created both an enthralling gothic thriller and a moving examination of The Magdalene Laundries' legacy. Its a joy to bring this story to screens.

The Magdalene Laundries began in Ireland during the 18th century and lasted for over 200 years. In 1996, the last Magdalene Laundry was closed, three years after the shocking discovery of an unmarked mass grave of 155 women on the grounds of one of the laundries. The Irish Government issued a formal apology two decades later in 2013, granting survivors 50 million in compensation.

Murtagh, the series' creator, will serve as an executive producer alongside series star Wilson, as well as Sam Lavender, Simon Maxwell, and Harry Wootliff. "It's deeply displeasure and distressing to me that so few people have heard of the Laundries that existed across Ireland," said Murtagh.

Motive Pictures will direct a set of episodes for Showtime, while Rachna Suri will direct the other block of episodes. Moore, the BBC's former director of BBC Drama, Jana Winograde and Gary Levine have also issued a statement.

'The Woman in the Wall' is a startling tale about a notorious and heartbreaking incident in Ireland that has ruined the lives of women for over 200 years. We are honored to bring Ruth Wilson back to Showtime with a powerful and moving series that is also relevant to our culture today.

The Woman in the Wall is currently not available on BBC One and iPlayer in the United Kingdom, as well as on Showtime in the United States, and will be distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution in all other countries.
