The Gathering is commemorating the BBCs Doctor Who 60th anniversary by releasing a themed set of cards in the third quarter of 2023, as part of the Wizards Presents streaming event.
The collaboration is part of the Magics Universes Beyond product line, which has previously released crossovers with other major franchises such as The Walking Dead and Fortnite. Four Commander decks, collectors boosters, and limited-time print-on-demand Secret Lair cards featuring doctors, companions, villains, and locations from throughout the show's 60-year history will be included as part of the new Doctor Who series set to begin next year. The Lord of the Rings: Tales from Middle-earth will be released in Q3 of 2023, but it will be a fully draftable booster set and legal in the current competitive play format. The new battlefield, mastery pass, player avatars, and pets will be included in the digital release through Magic: The Gathering Arena.
Individual cards include familiar characters and villains such as Frodo, Gandalf, and the Balrog, as well as new borderless scene cards. Each has a unique piece of art that can stand alone, but 18 of them will combine to create a particularly dramatic scene from the trilogy such as the Battle of the Pelennor Fields from The Return of the King.
The Wizards unveiled some new information about the Warhammer 40,000 set that will be released on October 7th. Each of the four Commander decks will demonstrate one of the wargames' main armies' strategies. The Imperium of Man will try to keep the tide of battle under control by defeating their opponents.
