Wes Cravens A Nightmare on Elm Street, a horror film that began a franchise, lives on as a horror film decades later. Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) is now haunting (and hunting) people in their dreams. Elm Street and Krueger have a long history of staying awake.

Argo

Tony Mendez, a CIA exfiltration specialist assigned to rescuing six former staff members of the American embassy in Tehran during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, is directed and starred by Ben Affleck, who is able to tell a compelling story through excellent performances, and compelling dialogue.

Baahubali: The Beginning

The Beginning, the most expensive Indian film at the time of its release, is a biblical epic by Marvel Studios, with a bit of Hamlet and Step Up in for good measure. It's all about Shivudu, an adventurer with superhuman strength who escapes his provincial life by scaling a massive waterfall, aids and romances a rebel warrior named Avanthika, then joins her to rescue a kidnapped queen from an evil emperor.

Blackhat

Michael Mann's unfairly maligned Blackhat is a well-known digital film director. While investigating an FBI investigation, Chen insists on the help of his old friend Nicholas Hathaway (Chris Hemsworth, who has never been hotter or cooler), an imprisoned genius hacker. It adds an additional layer to an already high-stakes situation.

Blackhat explores our evolving global relationship to technology through sharp digital cinematography and unforgettable set pieces. Mann shows the world's microscopic computer systems in a massive interconnected highway; a computer fan that sounds like a jet engine; and events that normally would be depicted as a dull stroke of keys instead depicted as hypnotic happenings beneath the surface of the visible world.

Blade Runner 2049

Ryan Gosling plays Officer K, a Blade Runner in Los Angeles who is on a lookout for a former Blade Runner who may be the answer to a fiery climate catastrophe that he believes was created by Ridley Scott. With extravagant moody set pieces, gorgeous lighting, tense action, and memorable performances, Blade Runner 2049 is a worthy successor to one of the greatest sci-fi films ever produced.

Blood and Bone

Blood and Bone is a superb example of the action genre and of Michael Jai Whites unique abilities as a filmmaker. From our list of the best Netflix action films:

Michael Jai White is a treasure trove in these parts, and of the many excellent DTV action films he has starred in, Blood and Bone may be the best. When Isaiah Bone meets Pinball (Dante Basco), he discovers how far the powerful people who control the circuit will go to maintain their illegal business. With jaw-dropping fights featuring former professional fighters Bob Sapp, Kimbo Slice, and Matt Mullins, Blood and Bone is an appropriate vehicle for White to pursue his

The Debt Collector

The Debt Collector is the first of a series of two terrific comedy films starring Scott Adkins (Avengement) and Louis Mandylor (My Big Fat Greek Wedding). Adkins plays French, a down-on-his-luck martial arts instructor who turns to debt collecting to pay off his own debts. Mandylor plays Sue, the veteran debt collector who French meets on his first day of work.

As the two get deeper into their work, they discover a scheme that puts a young child at danger, and they consider risking it all for themselves. Adkins and Mandylor have excellent chemistry in the lead roles, bringing this out of the echelon of solid DTV films and into the realm of great hangout films. Also, Tony Todd (Candyman) plays a mobster named Barbosa.

Dont Go Breaking My Heart

Dont Go Breaking My Heart, a hard-boiled triad crime drama, is one of the many high marks of Hong Kong's legendary career. Gattaca

Andrew Niccol has never produced a better film than Gattaca, either in 2011s In Time or 2018s Anon, yet neither has managed to surpass the sheer wonder of his directorial debut. With a powerful retro-futuristic setting, Vincent frees himself from the suspicions of the perpetrators who solved the crime as well as those of his co-worker Irene Cassini (Uma Thurman), the film is a spellbinding tale of science fiction.

Goodfellas

Goodfellas is one of Martin Scorsesses most popular and well-known films, and perhaps his last unimpeachable classic. Scorsese went on to repeat over and over, especially the introduction of a whole pack of colorful gangster characters who dont matter as much to him. (Im funny how? I mean funny like Im a clown? I amuse you?) its a sprawling saga of a criminal watching the world change until he doesnt recognize it anymore, made before any

Hustle

Hustle is a captivating basketball film directed by legendary basketball experts, as well as NBA players. Anthony Edwards, Boban Marjanovic, and others contribute to the film. PV

The Ip Man movies

The four main Ip Man series titles (all on Netflix) and the spinoff Master Z: Ip Man Legacy (not on Netflix, but on Peacock and Tubi, among others) are fantastic martial arts dramas. They are a great starting point for anyone interested in getting into the genre and a great comfort watch for martial arts enthusiasts.

Donnie Yen is completely immersed in himself as Ip Man, the sassy Wing Chun grandmaster who taught Bruce Lee (played by Danny Chan Kwok-kwan in the series), among others. The first two films were directed by Sammo Hung, the next two by Yuen Woo-ping; if thats not enough, I'll tell you what.

Lagaan

Margin Call

Margin Call, a film by J.C. Chandors, follows the employees of a prominent Wall Street investment bank as they struggle to comprehend and respond to what will ultimately be known as the global financial crisis of 2008. Despite its lack of didactic elements, the film nonetheless manages to transform financial esotericism into riveting drama through the strength of its casts performances.

Michael Clayton

This savage legal thriller is coming to Netflix at the end of the month, so get yours while you can (we have a whole list of the best movies to watch before they expire closer to the end of the month). From our list of the best thrillers you can watch at home:

The Night Comes For Us

The Raid is not a film about fucking whips, rather a mollywashing preamble. Joe Taslim, a fellow The Raid star, plays Ito, a gangland enforcer who betrays his Triad crime family while attempting to flee the country. Uwais, a fellow The Raid star, is a master of dramatic lighting and explosive handheld cinematography that keeps your adrenaline pumping.

Paddington

Paddington, the 2014 film, is equally as whimsical and earnest as inventive and unexpected. Ben Whishaw takes center stage as the Peruvian bear cub who travels aboard a lifeboat to London in search of a new home. While avoiding the dangers and hazards of the big city, Paddington sets off in search of the explorer who long ago explored his country.

Nicole Kidman and Peter Calpadi give devilishly funny performances as the film's antagonists, while Sally Hawkins and Hugh Bonneville shine as the vivacious Mrs. Brown and her risk-averse husband. Paddington is a must-see, and comes packed with original physical comedy.

The Paper Tigers

Alain Uy, Ron Yuan, and Mykel Shannon Jenkins play the eponymous Paper Tigers from Tran Quoc Baos, a kung fu action comedy set in the fictional camp of Death Man. The three former martial arts prodigies swear an oath to avenge their master's memory and bring his killer to justice.

Phantom Thread

Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) is an irascible haute couture dressmaker in 1950s London who is disturbed by his ongoing love affair with his muse Alma (Vicky Krieps), a strong-willed woman with strong desires and ambitions of his own. Add to that the elegant soundtrack by Jonny Greenwood and beautiful costume designs by Mark Bridges, and you've got what is undoubtedly one of Andersons finest films to date.

RRR

RRR is a thrilling bromance for all ages, packed with jaw-dropping action sequences, unforgettable music numbers, and two guys just being dudes. If you can, the Hindi dub on Netflix is still worthwhile.

Starship Troopers

Paul Verhoeven's 1997 sci-fi film Starship Troopers is set in a far-off future where the Federation, a fascistic military organization that rules the planet through a planetwide system of mandatory conscription, initiates a full-scale invasion of a terrifying race of giant alien insects. It has now been rediscovered as one of the best and most perceptive science fiction films of its time.

The Talented Mr. Ripley

Tom Ripley, an underachiever who has an unsettling knack for deceiving others, is played by Matt Damon in the film The Talented Mr. Ripley, a wealthy socialite living in Italy. Tom is hired by Dickie's father to retrieve his son for $1,000, and Tom's ongoing obsession with Dickie and his wife, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow), a twisted love-hate obsession with Dickie and his lifestyle.

The Talented Mr. Ripley is a tense, emotional thriller with great supporting performances from Cate Blanchett and Jack Davenport.

Unfriended

Unfriended is a horror film with a gimmick. The whole thing takes place on a laptop screen as the action unfolds over a Skype call between a group of friends. Friends start to die one by one in a terrifying and captivating series of events, and I highly recommend seeing it on a laptop if you can. PV
